Turbine discharge pressure is routed to impeller side of stator control piston to move stator blades to low angle position for improved engine economy during vehicle coast down operation. Low angle stator is also used for economical anti-creep idle and for higher stall speeds and acceleration when needed. For economical cruising and other operation, the stator blades are set at their high angle or open position.

    摘要： A hydrodynamic torque converter includes a pump wheel, a turbine wheel, and a stator wheel having a variable entrance between the blade rows upon at least one of these wheels, preferably on the stator wheel. The opening between the blades is adjustable automatically by the torque applied by the circulating fluid against the action of a compression spring. The blades on the wheel whose entrance is adjustable includes at least two annular members divided along a plane perpendicular to the axis of the wheel. The annular members are rotatable relative to one another approximately one-half blade pitch. The annular member becomes located in the inlet region of the blade row, is rotatable by the torque of the circulating flow only in the region of the installed condition against the force of the spring to a position that reduces the inlet cross section of the blade row.

    摘要： A torque converter stator has interchangeable blades and has a body member with a central hub and an annular wall. Dovetail openings are located on an outer surface of the annular wall. Each blade has a dovetail pin that is removably received within a respective one of the dovetail openings. A cover plate is removably attached to the body member in order to secure the blades in place within their respective dovetail openings. A heated duct ring is positioned over the outer ends of the blades and allowed to heat shrink into contact with these ends as the duct ring cools and shrinks, thereby securing the duct ring to the remainder of the stator.
