Black-and-white elements, such as radiographic films, can be processed in roomlight because they include certain light absorbing dyes and desensitizers. Processing of such elements can be achieved using a processing kit and a two-stage process carried out in the same light- and fluid-tight processing apparatus. In the first stage, development is initiated with a developing composition having a pH of from about 10 to about 12.5, and comprising an appropriate black-and-white developing agent and a sulfite. After an appropriate time, a non-sulfite fixing agent is introduced into the processing apparatus or container to provide a combined developing/fixing composition, and development and fixing are carried out simultaneously. The processing method is carried out quickly, usually within about 90 seconds. The presence of sulfite and high pH in both stages decolorizes or deactivates the particulate dyes. The processing kit includes the photographic element, a vessel containing a developing composition, a vessel containing fixing composition, and a light-tight, hand-held container for holding an exposed element as it is inserted into the first and second vessels to carry out processing.

An apparatus for developing a dental x-ray film which is packaged in a light-proof envelope having two covering surfaces, in which a tear strip is formed on the covering surfaces at an edge common to the package and the covering surfaces are joined to one another so as to be easily pulled apart at their two edges running parallel to the edge with the tear strips, the apparatus having a developing tank with a developing frame underneath an entry slot in which the dental x-ray film is to be inserted. Above the entry slot leading into the developing tank and in line with the latter, the developing apparatus has an insertion shaft for the package with the dental x-ray film, which is open at the insertion end which lies across the plane of the direction of insertion of the dental x-ray film into the developing tank and at right angles to the top of the developing tank, and into which slots for receiving the tear strips of the package lead from opposite sides, these two slots being at the same time open at the insertion end.

The adapter is particularly useful with processors which are adapted to handle only a particular size or type of cassette and adapts the processor to use various sizes and types of cassettes.

A film receiving case is moved upwardly to the vicinity of the lower end of the film package, and the films are allowed to fall onto the case. The case is then moved down to completely separate the films from the light-tight envelope, and a shutter is closed between the envelope and the films to shield the films from light.

The film magazine has a film stack carrier provided with at least one opening for removal of the film and a casing member which is movable with respect to the film stack carrier. In order to guarantee the light-tight shielding during the introduction of the film magazine, a shutter is provided along the inlet slot which is parallel movable within the interior of the housing and serves as support for the film stack carrier. The shutter has a circumferential edge which cooperates with a respective circumferential edge of the housing for providing a first light-tight shielding and a second light-tight shielding is provided through cooperation of the circumferential edge with a respective groove provided in the casing member.

An arrangement for introducing photosensitive strips into and for transporting the same through the interior of a developing machine includes an attaching compartment at the input part of the machine adjacent to a region into which the leading end of the respective strip is introduced through an input slot, the compartment having two opposite open ends one communicating with the exterior and the other with the interior of the machine. A lid is mounted on the walls bounding the compartment for pivoting between its open and closed positions and is latched in its closed position by a latching device. A separating slide is mounted on rails arranged at the other end for movement across the same between its open and closed positions. The opening of the lid is accomplished by gripping a handgrip which actuates a switch that commences the operation of a drive moving the slide into its closed position. Then, the latching device releases the lid, and the lid is opened. The leading end of the strip is attached to the band and the lid is closed, which triggers opening motion for the separating member.

A small X-ray film developer has a lightproof housing having a door through which a plurality of exposed films in their lightproof wrappers may be introduced by sliding the wrapper flaps over the thin edge of a plate adapted to slide toward and away from an identification card holder which is adapted to be rotated and to be raised and lowered. After the card and films have been introduced the door is closed and a rod under the flaps is rotated about 135* around the plate to open the wrapper flaps exposing a small portion of each film so that each may be contacted by gummy portions on the card when it is turned. The plate is then slid away from the card thus withdrawing the films and the card is turned and lowered dipping the films into a developing tank. Valves controlling sources of developer, fixer and water are then operated to supply the tank successively therewith. The card is then raised and a fan is turned on to dry the developed films. The door is then opened and the card with attached developed films is removed. A film cover with appropriate windows for the films is then attached to the card leaving its identifying inscriptions and the films readable.
