摘要: Aspects of the present disclosure provide various magnetic recording slider structures and fabrication methods that can reduce head overcoat (HOC) thickness without significantly reducing the lifetime and reliability of a slider by using a protective cap placed on preselected locations on the outermost surface or HOC of the slider. A slider includes a writer comprising an energy-assisted recording element. The writer is configured to store information on a magnetic medium using the energy-assisted recording element. The slider includes a head overcoat (HOC) layer providing an outermost media facing surface. The slider further includes a protective cap positioned on the HOC layer to at least partially cover the energy-assisted recording element, the protective cap including a preselected shape configured to protect the energy-assisted recording element.

摘要: A slider comprises an air bearing surface having a leading edge at a first end of the air bearing surface; a trailing edge at a second end of the air bearing surface, wherein the first end is opposite to the second end; a first region adjacent to the trailing edge, wherein the first region comprises one or more transducer elements; and a second region adjacent to the first region and the leading edge. The air bearing surface has a protective overcoat layer as an outermost layer, wherein the protective overcoat layer extends across the entire air bearing surface. The air bearing surface comprises a lapped surface and a plurality of milled surfaces, wherein a surface potential difference between the lapped surface and a milled surface is 0+/−50 milliVolts or less as measured according to Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (KPFM).

摘要: Techniques for determining a maximum permissible media deposition temperature for depositing one or more layers over a substrate of a heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) platform. In one aspect, a method includes controlling a thermomechanical analyzer to measure the mechanical expansion of a glass material versus temperature within a temperature range that is below the primary transformation temperature (Tg) of the glass material to detect a possible initial transformation that occurs within the glass material at a temperature (Tt) below the primary transformation temperature (Tg). If such an initial transformation is detected, the maximum deposition temperature is set based on the initial transformation temperature (Tt), rather than on the primary transformation temperature (Tg). Otherwise, the maximum permissible media deposition temperature is set based on the transformation temperature (Tg). In other aspects, methods for characterizing a glass material for suitability within the substrate of the HAMR platform are provided.

摘要: The present disclosure generally relates to a magnetic media drive employing a magnetic recording head. The magnetic recording head comprises a first write head, a second write head, at least one read head, and a thermal fly height control element. The first write head is a wide writing write head comprising a first main pole and a first trailing shield. The second write head a narrow writing write head comprising a second main pole, a trailing gap, a second trailing shield, and one or more side shields. The first main pole has a shorter height and a greater width than the second main pole. The second main pole has a curved or U-shaped surface disposed adjacent to the trailing gap. The thermal fly height control element and the at least one read head are aligned with a center axis of the second main pole of the second write head.
