Abstract:
A broadband, high-gain, active antenna system is disclosed, which operates with a bi-directive reception pattern while in its standard configuration and with a directive reception pattern over several octaves of Radio Frequency (RF) spectrum when affixed with a tuned scatter-plate. As a standalone active antenna system the disclosed antenna probe element and the amplifier subassembly exhibit the bi-directional directive properties of a standard fixed length dipole, while the addition of a scatter-plate makes the antenna directive with separate frequency-dependant directive modes. The scatter-plate can be tuned such that these separate directive modes occur at convenient areas of the RF frequency spectrum. Other means of achieving directivity are disclosed using the antenna probe element and the amplifier subassembly.
Abstract:
The present invention uses a novel adaptive soft decision device in order to jointly optimize decision device and DFE operation. The soft decision device receives the input and output samples of the slicer and generates a feedback sample by non-linearly combining them with respect to a single decision reference parameter. Moreover, the soft decision device provides novel error terms used to adapt equalizer coefficients in order to jointly optimize decision device and equalizer coefficients.

Abstract:
Various embodiments of the invention provide apparatus, methods, and systems for effectuating an increase in the effective bandwidth of a cable television distribution plant in a manner compatible with most common cable television systems. By using methods and systems for simultaneously transmitting a standard analog television signal and a digital data signal in a manner that minimizes interference of each with the other, one or more data carriers may be embedded within one or more analog television channels in accordance with various aspects of the present invention. These combined signals can be transmitted transparently over the existing cable television distribution plant to a location at or near the subscribers so that, among other things, the set top boxes can download context for controllable viewing when they choose.
Abstract:
Methods and systems for simultaneous transmission of a standard analog television video signal and a data signal. A transmitter system comprises an analog video signal path and a data signal path. The data signal path produces a data signal that is added to, combined with, or otherwise imposed on the video signal, so as to be substantially in quadrature with the video signal as sensed by television receivers in the broadcast region. An abatement signal is generated and applied to the video signal to correct for effects of the data on the video signal. Receivers can among other things separate the data from the video signal, process the data signal in order to extract and recover the data, and forward the data for output. Such receivers can also include or contain, if desired, output to television receivers for rendering television programming. Other aspects and features are also disclosed and claimed.

Abstract:
The present invention uses a feedback equalizer architecture with feedback samples comprised of weighted contributions of scaled soft and inversely-scaled hard decision samples, and adapts forward and feedback filters using weighted contributions of update error terms, such as Constant Modulus Algorithm (CMA) and Least Mean Squares (LMS) error terms. Combining weights are selected on a symbol-by-symbol basis by a novel measure of current sample quality. Adaptation methods of the sample quality measure are discussed. Furthermore, the present invention contains an automatic gain control circuit whose gain is adjusted at every symbol instance by a stochastic gradient descent update rule, minimizing novel cost criteria, to provide scaling factors for the hard and soft decisions.
Abstract:
Various aspects and embodiments of the present invention derive statistics of received signal quality and use these statistics to jointly control operation of timing recovery, carrier recovery, automatic gain control, and equalization functions.
Abstract:
Methods and systems for broadcasting data over a television signal spectrum. A network center (30) receives media content elements from content providers (20a, 20b, 20c, 20d). The network center (30) transmits a bundled content element to a wide network delivery system. The wide network delivery system transfers the bundled content elements (32) to a local broadcasting station (50n). The local broadcasting station (50n) includes an edge server (52b) for storing content elements (32) intended for a local market. At a specified time, a new local content element (51b) is provided by the edge server (52b) to a signal combiner. The signal combiner inserts the new local content element (51b) into the television signal spectrum. A transmission facility (53b) broadcasts simultaneously a signal related to the new local content element (51b) and a convention television signal. A receiver receives the television signal spectrum and extracts the new local content element (51b) from the spectrum.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus are described for inserting data in a communications system, such as in an existing analog communications system, using quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) with in-phase analog signals and quadrature data signals. These methods can minimize the distortion to the analog signals while maximizing the data signal strength. The data signals may be sub-modulated on a subcarrier frequency (201) such that the data signals do not interfere with the analog signal detectors in the analog signal receivers, and may be processed with an abatement filter (202) to mitigate the distortion due to Nyquist mismatch in the receiver. The injection phase of data signals may be determined (206) by adaptive algorithms, using a monitor analog signal receiver (103).
