A method and apparatus for managing entitlements in a broadcast stream are disclosed. The method includes receiving a manifest containing program information for a program in the broadcast stream, with the program information providing a program entitlement block. The method uses entitlements specified in the program entitlement block to enforce entitlements for the program.

A method and apparatus for securely and remotely enabling the playing of a media program encrypted by a content encryption key over the Internet is disclosed. A license encryption key and a content decryption key are separately and securely transmitted to the receiver. The license encryption key is stored in the CAM and later used to decrypt the content encryption key so that the media program may be recovered.

Example apparatus and methods concern realizing the boxed experience for digital content acquisition. Example apparatus and methods associate a digital content purchase with digital metadata. The digital content purchase may be a computer game, a console video game, a film, a television program, or an e-book. The digital metadata may describe a user-customizable physical item portrayed within the digital content purchase. Example apparatus and methods include digital metadata with a digital content purchase, and control the re-creation of a physical item from the digital metadata. Example apparatus and methods may limit the number of times the physical item may be re-created from the digital metadata, and may control the frequency with which the physical item may be re-created.
Abstract:
A method for DTCP to HLS conversion is provided that starts with a standard DTCP Protected Content Packet (PCP) structure. The PCP payload data is chunked at defined chunk boundaries. Each chunk is then appended with a pad to be compatible with HLS. An HLS playlist is then provided using the PCP header with identification of the chunks and a keytag. The chunk is encrypted with a DTCP key calculated by the DTCP standard using: (a) copy control bits; (b) a nonce, and (c) an exchange key ID. Relevant PCP header fields are provided in the keytag for the HLS playlist supporting the transaction that enables calculation of the DTCP content key to enable later decryption of the chunks. The system further provides a revised HLS GET for DLNA to enable trick play seek operations to be performed on the converted HLS.

The power of analytical modeling is added to existing methods for specifying policies. Generally speaking, humans use their knowledge and experience to draft policies at a relatively high level. These policies then incorporate analytical models which provide the intelligence on how to most effectively apply the high-level policy to a particular situation. When a policy is invoked, the analytical model provides up-to-date intelligence at a level of completeness and refinement not possible with previous techniques. As a result, fewer policies need to be drafted, and those few need to be updated less frequently than in previous schemes. Rather than updating the policy itself, the analytical model is automatically updated whenever new data are fed into it. As the analytical model incorporates new observational data, it grows more powerful and thus automatically increases the effectiveness of the high-level policy.

License information, including a license identifier (if present) is associated with a protected work that is published within an electronic information network. The license information indicates a purported license to publish the protected work. The license information may be audited by or on behalf of a licensing entity to determine whether the purported license is a valid license. The protected work may take the form of a protected audio work included within an audio component of a composite media content item that further includes a video component. Publication of a protected work may be granted or denied, access to the protected work may be enabled or blocked, and/or a beneficiary of revenue generated from publication of the protected work may be redirected based on a result of the audit.

A method of modifying the output of an output device is provided. A first code, associated with a first recipient party, is received and used to generate, within the output device, a second code, the second code containing encoded data identifying the first recipient party and instructions for activating an additional functionality of the output device. The additional functionality is activated in accordance with the instructions contained in the second code. The output of the output device is modified according to data encoded in the second code, to encode a third code in the output of the output device, the third code including an ID code associated with the first recipient party. A corresponding output device is also provided. By incorporating an ID code associated with the first recipient party a controlling entity is able to determine which first code, and therefore which recipient party, activated the additional functionality within the output device.

Methods and apparatus are provided for providing a DRM service by a user terminal apparatus consuming DRM content in a service environment that provides the DRM content using a plurality of incompatible DRM systems. A license corresponding to the DRM content is acquired from a service providing apparatus that provides the DRM content. It is determined whether the license is a common license having a common DRM interface format. The common DRM interface format of the common license is converted to a format of a first DRM system installed in the user terminal apparatus, when the license is the common license. The license having the format of the first DRM system is applied in reproducing the DRM content. The common license is provided from the service providing apparatus to the user terminal apparatus through a common DRM interface when the service providing apparatus does not support the first DRM system.
