The invention relates to weather-resistant pearlescent pigments which have improved application properties and are based on a small glass plate that is coated with highly refractive metal oxides and a protective coating located on the top metal oxide layer. The inventive pigments are characterized in that the small glass plate has an average thickness of 50 to 500 nm. According to variant A, a metal oxide layer whose refractive index n exceeds 1.8 and which comprises TiO 2 having a rutile concentration ranging from 80 to 100 percent by weight as well as a protective SiO 2 coating are applied. According to variant B, a metal oxide layer whose refractive index n exceeds 1.8 and which comprises TiO 2 having a rutile concentration ranging from 80 to 100 percent by weight as well as a protective coating containing a first protective layer with cerium oxide and/or cerium oxide hydrate and/or cerium hydroxide and a second protective SiO 2 layer are applied.
