Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for the starting up of at least one first field instrument (104), wherein the method comprises the step of signaling a first demand for electrical power output (146) of the first field instrument over a first port (120) to a supply unit (102). According to this method, the first field instrument is previously connected to the supply unit over the first port by means of a first communication connection (144). In addition, the reception of the power output is effected according to the first demand for power output by the first field instrument over the first communication connection and the first port, by which the first field instrument is activated. In an additional step, a power usage unit (124) of the first field instrument is assigned to the first port, wherein the power usage unit is provided as consumer load for the power output. In addition, the allocation of a power supply unit (126) of the first field instrument is effected to a second port (122), with the power supply unit provided for the supply of an additional second power output (152) over the second port. In a different aspect, the invention relates to a field instrument and a supply unit. The invention is particularly suited for the supply of field instruments over an Ethernet connection (power over Ethernet), wherein several inline switched Ethernet field instruments according to the invention can be supplied with electrical power by one upstream supply unit such as a PoE switch.
Abstract:

Abstract:
A method, an apparatus and a system for gigabit Ethernet (GbE) using only 2 pairs of wires for a single communications link are described. This network communication may be referred to as 2-pair 1000Base-T. GbE using only 2 wire pairs per link may offer increased port density over a conventional 1000Base-T link. As an alternative, 2-pair 1000Base-T may also provide increased link bandwidth over the existing 1000Base-T standard. When a given number of conventional links in a system are replaced by the same number of 2-pair 1000Base-T links, the system bandwidth may also be consequently increased. Transformers and power supplies may be combined with GbE utilizing only two wire pairs to provide power over Ethernet (PoE) solutions.
Abstract:
An electrical circuit comprising a power supply, a load, a first pair of parallel positive cables between the power supply and the load, a first pair of parallel negative cables between the load and the power supply, and incendive arc prevention means, in which the incendive arc prevention means comprises monitoring means adapted to monitor the first pair of positive cables and the first pair of negative cables, and to detect if the current and/or voltage in one of the first pair of positive cables deviates from the other, and if the current and/or voltage in one of the first pair of negative cables deviates from the other, and in which the incendive arc prevention means comprises a control means adapted to fully or partially isolate the power supply from the first pair of positive cables and the first pair of negative cables if the monitoring means detects that the current and/or voltage of one of the first pair of positive cables has deviated from the other, or if the current and/or voltage of one of the first pair of negative cables has deviated from the other.
Abstract:
Circuitry and methodology for providing data transmission in a Power over Ethernet (PoE) system having a Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) for providing power to a PoE link, and a Powered Device (PD) coupled to the PoE link for receiving the power from the PSE. The PSE and PD support data communication with each other in a common mode between two pairs of lines in an Ethernet twisted pair cable.
Abstract:
A device server intended for attaching serial devices to a network includes Ethernet communications, an Ethernet switch, and serial communication capability so that multiple device servers are connected in a "daisy chain" or series pattern. Galvanic isolation of the power supply from the housing and communication ports, screw terminal and modular connections, DIN rail mounting, broad power supply voltage ranges or "Power-over- Ethernet" and operator visible indicator lamps with a pulse stretching feature greatly simplify installation and use.

Abstract:
A system and method to remotely activate a procedure, preferably to Reload, a transceiver unit powered with an Ethernet cable. The system and method includes power source including circuitry to reverse the polarity of voltage for a desired amount of time to a detection circuit in the transceiver unit. Upon successful detection, a reload circuit preferably in the transcevier unit activates the Reload procedure in the transceiver unit.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus are disclosed for detecting ground faults in an Ethernet system. An Ethernet switch is configured to provide inline power to a plurality of ports each having positive and negative rails. Current is injected into selected rails of a port and ground isolation is temporarily broken for the port. A detected mismatch in current levels between the positive and negative rails of the port indicates a ground fault in the port.
Abstract:
Novel system and methodology for adjusting a current limit threshold in a Power over Ethernet (PoE) system in accordance with requirements of a Powered Device (PD). A system for supplying power to a PD over a communications link has a requirement determining circuit for determining a PD's requirement, and a control circuit for setting a parameter restricting an output signal of the PSE in accordance with the determined PD's requirement. The control circuit may set a current limit threshold of the PSE and/or the PD in accordance with the determined PD's requirement, such as a power requirement.
