A letter box (10) comprises an upper part (10a, 20) with an open end, a lower part (10b, 21) having a movable bottom part (22) for optionally sealing an open end of the lower part, a door (23) hinged to the upper part (10a, 20), a front (25) with at least one front opening (26, 27), a back (24, 34), and sides (28, 33) connecting the front and back of the letter box, the letter box (10) having fastening means (21a, 36) for enabling the optional connection of an expansion part (30) to the lower part (10b, 21) for increasing the post storing capability of the letter box (10).

An apparatus and method for enhancing the security of a cluster box unit (100) which includes a protective enclosure (110), internal cabinetry, door, hinge and locking system. The cluster bogy unit may also include outgoing mail compartment doors (240) that are heavily constructed and rigidly reinforced, with the locks (500) carried thereon protectively shielded, and with the extensible bolts (510) of these locks being engaged by brackets (960) that not only lock the outgoing mail compartment doors but also the master loading doors (130, 140) of the cluster box units. The cluster box unit may also include master loading doors are provided with hinges (151, 161) that extend the íu11 height of the doors, hinges that are defined by pivotally interfitting elements of extrusions (132/152, 142/162) that very sturdily mount the master loading doors, that prevent prying or bending the doors in the vicinities of their hinges. The interfitting elements of the hinge extrusions also permit the doors to be installed on their surrounding door frames quickly and easily, and permit one or both of the master loading doors to be quickly and easily removed for service or replacement when necessary.

The invention concerns a container for receiving objects thrown therein, comprising an opening at the top. The invention is characterized in that when an object is thrown into said container, said object is detected therein by an integrated electronic system, the detection of an object being thrown controlling video and/or audio data editing appliances. Furthermore, inside the container is a voltage source for supplying current to the integrated electronic system and the video and/or audio appliances, said voltage source being itself supplied with current by at least one solar module arranged outside the container. It is also possible to provide an electrical power grid supply of 220 volts.

A method for outbound shipment of packages directly from home or office includes the steps of registering a user, receiving authorization from the user to pay a shipping agent at least one fee incured by the user, and receiving a notification from the shipping agent of the fee incurred by the user. The method further includes the steps of paying the fee directly to the shipping agent; and receiving reimbursement from the user for the payment of the fee to the shipping agent. The method further may include the steps of providing the user with a transfer device, and signaling the shipping agent to pick-up the package from the user. In addition, the package may be stored in the transfer device.

A mechanical lock or latch is retrofit with an auxiliary electronic apparatus that prevents unlocking of the lock/latch until an electric actuation signal is applied. The retrofitting is desirably accomplished without an disassembly or modification of the original lock/latch. An exemplary application of the illustrated blocker is to retrofit mechanical locks used in postal mailboxes to provide electronically-keyed access. Such electronic control enables generation of electronic access data useful for enhancing postal employee accountability and improving customer satisfaction.

A storage device comprising a cabinet (1) that has a plurality of mutually juxtaposed compartments and a first means (6, 7, 64-66, 74-76, 80, 81) for permitting the compartments (31) to be opened selectively. The cabinet includes a plurality of generally parallel panels (3) which delimit respective compartments. Two roller shutters are guided for movement along the compartment openings and have complementary edges (61, 71) that extend parallel with the edges of said panels. The shutters are arranged to move so as to join the edges complementarily. Shutter movement is controlled so as to enable a selected compartment to be opened while leaving remaining compartments screened-off.
