Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft eine Vorrichtung zur Verringerung von Rußpartikeln in einem Abgas, insbesondere einem Abgas eines Verbrennungsmotors, aufweisend ein Außenrohr (1) und ein dazu konzentrisch angeordnetes Innenrohr (2), die einen von dem Abgas durchströmbaren Zwischenraum (3) bilden, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass innen an dem Außenrohr (1) mindestens eine ringförmige Elektrode (4) mit einer Vielzahl von radial in den Zwischenraum ragenden Elektrodenspitzen (5) angeordnet ist, wobei Anschlüsse (6, 7) zur Verbindung der ringförmigen Elektrode (4) und des Innenrohres (2) mit einer Hochspannungsquelle (8) zur Ausbildung eines elektrischen Feldes (E) im Zwischenraum (3) vorhanden sind. Vorzugsweise sind mindestens zwei ringförmige Elektroden (4a, 4b) axial hintereinander mit einem jeweiligen Elektrodenabstand (A), vorzugsweise von 10 bis 30 mm, angeordnet. Die Elektrodenspitzen (5) sind insbesondere etwa kegelförmig oder stiftförmig ausgestaltet und weisen eine radiale Länge (L) von 3 bis 10 mm auf. Bei jeder ringförmigen Elektrode (4) haben die Elektrodenspitzen (5) in Umfangsrichtung einen Spitzenabstand (S) von 3 bis 20 mm, vorzugsweise 5 bis 10 mm. Auf diese Weise lässt sich ein sehr effektives und gleichmäßiges radiales elektrisches Feld (E) zur Ionisation aufbauen.

A method for inducing the regeneration of a particulate filter (125) associated with an exhaust gas emitting engine (105) while being operated in a vehicle (100) in variable driving conditions. The method includes turning on, for a time period, a heating device substantially in punctual contact with said filter at its gas entrance. Said turning on of said heating device is subject to the following conditions: i) an average pressure of the exhaust gas at the entrance of the filter is greater than a predetermined value; ii) an instantaneous pressure of the exhaust gas exhaust gas at the entrance of the filter is at a high improbable value. The time period for such heating device to stay turned on is sufficiently long to reach the particulate ignition temperature and for such instantaneous pressure to get from such high improbable value to a significantly lower value. Said average pressure is obtained by averaging a plurality of pressure data sensed at the entrance of the filter.

Disclosed is a particulate matter reducing apparatus for a diesel engine capable of reducing particulate matter in a convenient manner through a relatively compact structure, preventing the shortening of the lifespan of a filter, and improving particulate matter burning efficiency. The particulate matter reducing apparatus for a diesel engine according to the present invention includes a housing arranged on a flow channel for the passage of exhaust gas from the diesel engine, a filter accommodated in the housing to collect particulate matter from the exhaust gas flowing into the housing, electrodes for transmitting electrical signals to the filter, and a control unit for controlling electrical signals from the electrodes. The particulate matter reducing apparatus of the present invention is advantageous in that particulate matter is burned and removed by directly heating the filter. The apparatus of the present invention is more convenient than the system wherein a filter needs to be removed and washed. Further, the apparatus of the present invention is structurally compact and has a lower manufacturing cost than a system wherein a filter is heated by an electrical heater or a diesel burner. Further, the apparatus of the present invention is advantageous in that the filter is relatively uniformly heated rather than being partially heated, lengthening the lifespan of the filter.

An exhaust treatment system (20) is provided. The system may include a particulate trap (34) configured to remove one or more types of particulate matter from an exhaust flow of an engine (18). The system may also include a catalyst (32) configured to chemically alter at least one component of the exhaust flow. Further, the system may include an exhaust conduit (26) configured to direct the exhaust flow from the engine to the particulate trap and the catalyst. In addition, the exhaust treatment system may include a heating system (38) configured to maintain the temperature of the catalyst above a first predetermined temperature. The heating system may also be configured to periodically raise the temperature of the particulate trap above a higher, second predetermined temperature to thereby effectuate a regeneration of the particulate trap by oxidizing particulate matter accumulated in the particulate trap.
