A method of operating a closed photobioreactor for cultivation of phototrophic microorganisms. The photobioreactor comprises a culture liquid and is partially or completely surrounded by water of a water body. A density difference between the culture liquid and the surrounding water is provided so that the position of the photobioreactor in the water body is controlled. A closed photobioreactor for cultivation of phototrophic microorganisms. The photobioreactor is adapted to comprise a culture liquid and to be partially or completely surrounded by water of a water body. The photobioreactor comprises means for determining the density difference between the culture liquid and the surrounding water.

Systems, devices, and methods for releasing one or more cell components from a photosynthetic organism. A bioreactor system is operable for growing photosynthetic organisms. Some of the methods include contacting the photosynthetic organism with an energy-activatable sensitizer, and activating the energy-activatable sensitizer, thereby releasing a cellular component from at least one of, for example, a membrane structure, tubule, vesicle, cisterna, organelle, cell compartment, plastid, or mitochondrion, associated with the photosynthetic organisms.

Mit einer derartigen Trägervorrichtung wird die Möglichkeit geschaffen, beispielsweise Makroalgen in geschützen, aber auch ungeschützten Meeresgebieten mit rauen Verhältnissen durch Wind und Wellen zu kultivieren. Ein bekannte Trägervorrichtung mit einer Ringkonstruktion, an deren Aussering direkt Auftriebsmittel und Verankerung befestigt waren, war im Betriet instablil und wurde durch grosse Belastungen der Ringkonstruktion beim Bergen unter Algenbewuchs teilsweise zerstört. Die erfindungsgemässe einfach handhabbare und besonders robuste Trägervorrichtung (1) sieht deshalb eine weitgehende Entkopplung einer in der Wassersäule höhenverstellbaren Ringkonstruktion (2) aus der Kraftübertragungskette vor. Beim Hieven muss der Aussenrihg (13) der Ringkonstruktion nur die Erntelast tragen. Dazu ist ein zentrales Auftriebsmittel (4) direkt mit der Verankerung (5) durch ein zentrales Tragseil (6) verbunden, das durch einen führenden, zentralen Innenring (23) in der gegenüber dem zentralen Innenring (23) dauerhaft verspannten Kultureinheit (7, 8) an dem zentralen Tragseil (6) aufgehängt. Dazu verlaufen von zentralen Hahnepotringen (9, 10) jeweils paarweise einander zugeordnete Hahnepotseile (11, 12) zu gemeinsamen Anschlagpunkten (14) auf dem Aussenring (13).

A system for culturing seaweed, including Enteromorpha clathrata, is provided comprising a shallow container (12), an aqueous solution (14) capable of supporting growth of said seaweed within said shallow container, a barrier array (16) in contact with said aqueous solution, and a seaweed growing in contact with said barrier array. Methods of harvesting seaweed and remediating a waste stream using seaweed are also disclosed.

The invention concerns a product (1) and a procedure for the manufacture of a product (1) for the further transport of an incoming light, comprising at least one layer (3) of material substance (2) in which a number of optical fibre threads (6) are incorporated, each optical fibre thread (6) comprising an input surface (7) for the interception of the incoming light, and an output surface (8) for emission of the incoming light from the input surface (7), in that said surfaces (7, 8) are connected by a body (9) through which body (9) the incoming light is conducted from the input surface (7) to the output surface (8), said output surface (8) and input surface (7) lying substantially free of the layer (3) of the material substance, said layer (3) comprising a first surface (4) oriented towards the incoming light. The input surface (7) and the output surface (8) are both able to intercept and emit light and are extending from the first surface (4), said light including both visible light and UV and infrared light. There is hereby achieved a product and a procedure for the manufacture of said product which reflects an incoming light in the same direction as that in which it has been intercepted. The product is thus suitable for road stripes, signs, clothing, algae growth, airports, tele- and data-communications etc.

The invention relates to the development of a novel artificial sea water medium comprising conventional salts as NaCl and MgSO4 with the addition of KCl in the proportion defined in the specification to generate biomass of higher carotenogenesis in particular betacarotene and its isomers using Dunaliella salina (ARL 5) . The strain has an unique property of having a wide range of pH and temperature tolerance which is beneficial in production terms as it is grown in external conditions (i.e., Outdoors).

A seaweed field forming material characterized by comprising fertilizer components incorporated in a concrete material or the like. Various modes are available, in which solid-form fertilizer components are dispersed into a concrete structure, fertilizer components are dissolved for inclusion into concrete when it is produced, or fertilizer components are impregnated into a porous material. Fertilizer components contained in a material or structure gradually elute in the sea to be used as a nutriment for seaweeds such as sea tangle and prompt their growth, thereby forming an excellent seaweed field thick with seaweeds.
