Abstract: A module and method for building a reef for coastal protection are disclosed, the module including a receptacle for receiving oyster shells, wherein the receptacle includes a biodegradable material and is water-permeable and sufficiently durable to securely retain the oyster shells when installed in a body of water. The module optionally includes a fastener configured to fasten adjacent modules together. The method is a method of coastal protection including providing an artificial reef structure in offshore waters, wherein the artificial reef structure is placed inside the surf zone. The artificial reef structure is assembled by providing more than one of the modules of the invention and attaching each module to an adjacent module with a fastener.

Abstract: A floating barrier system has a plurality of connected floating barrier units. Capture net segments are positioned on the floating barrier units by support post members, forming a barrier to vessel passage. Lanyards attach the ends of the capture net segments to the floating barrier units. Upon a vessel striking the capture net segments with sufficient force, the capture nets detach from the support post members and/or pull the support post members over, and the forces from the vessel are transferred via the lanyards to the floating barrier unit. The vessel is prevented from fully passing over the floating barrier unit, thus itself forming a barrier to passage by other vessels.

Abstract: A coastal resilience system for disrupting wave energy and storm surge flux and allowing accumulation of tidal-borne sediment has an interconnected network of biomatter-heavy floating mats positioned in water near a shoreline, and an interconnection subsystem with connection lines flexibly connecting adjacent floatable mats. Lines may be connected, at a plurality of force transfer points or regions within or near the interior of the mat, to other interconnection components positioned within the mat. In some embodiments, mats have yoke sites spaced around their edges and a connection line extends in a straight line from a first yoke site, through the interior of a mat, and to a second yoke site. The connection lines may intersect at an intersection position in the interior of the floatable mat, multiple connection lines may extend across the interior of the mat, but not always through a center of the interior of the mat.

Abstract: An integrated system comprising a barrier, such as a weir with movable gates, controllably blocks water flow in a natural or concrete lined channel. Without substantially impeding flow in normal conditions, the barrier is configured to back up flood waters to spill into an upstream prepared detention basin. Water is thus kept from downstream areas until subsequently drained through a controlled spill. Multiple units installed in a watershed can store significant amounts of flood water, e.g., during a hurricane, protecting life and property downstream. The electromechanically-operated gates can be operated locally or from a remote control center. Gauges and sensors positioned near the weir and/ or throughout the watershed can provide data used to control one or more barriers in the watershed, and the data may be used to train a machine learning model to control the system.
