Abstract: A device (1) has a surface relief structure (2) which has a plurality of regions (3). The regions (3) include grey scale regions (4) which are too small to be separately resolvable to the human eye. Each grey scale region (4) is one of a limited number of different grey scale region structure types. The different grey scale region structure types appear, by reason of their differing diffuse scattering characteristics, to have different intensities when the device (1) is illuminated by a light-source (5) and viewed by an observer (6). The device is useful in authentication applications and has particular applicability as an anti-forgery security device on bank notes, credits cards, cheques, share certificates and other similar documents.

Abstract: Apparatus for determining a number of aggregates each of which is representative of the sum of areas of regions of a corresponding particular brightness in an image scanned by a scanning electron microscope. The apparatus includes a chopper (24) which from each line signal generated by the scanning electron microscope generates a train of pulses the amplitudes of which pulses are representative of respective instantaneous signal strengths in the line signal at time spaced intervals. Accumulations of pulses are made in a pulse height analyser having a number of counters (C u, C u, C u...C u), the accumulation of pulses of a particular pulse height appearing in a particular one of said counters and thereby representing a particular one of the area aggregates. The chopper (24) is controlled by an oscillator (30) operation of which is itself controlled by a logic circuitry including a comparator (38) and a gate (31) to be responsive to a signal indicative of whether the scanning electron microscope is operating and to an externally applicable control signal. The line signals are separately routed via a summing amplifier (45) to the visual display device (10a) of the scanning electron microscope in a manner permitting superimposition of selected ones of the aforementioned pulses onto the line signals, for delineating in the visual display device image of regions of a selected brightness.

Abstract: Jet printing apparatus in which a second electrode structure (17, 19; 33, 34) is located between the conventional droplet deflecting electrodes (17, 18; 31, 32) of the apparatus and the surface (15) being printed, to alter the trajectory of scanned droplets (14) so that they strike the surface (15) substantially orthogonally to the plane of the surface. This enables good registration of patterns produced byjet printing on to wide fabrics, carpets and the like, using widely deflected droplets (14), even if the surface (15) being printed is a non-smooth surface or becomes wrinkled as it passes through the printing apparatus.

Abstract: The present invention relates to plants with increased levels of water soluble carbohydrates, particularly fructan, in the stem and leaf sheath. The present invention also provides methods of identifying and/or producing these plants. In particular, the present invention relates to a novel class of polypeptides designated MYB13 which upregulate the expression of enzymes involved in fructan synthesis. The present invention further relates to a novel promoter element that can be used to express genes predominantly in the stem and leaf sheath during the early reproductive stage of a plant.

Abstract: This invention concerns a fluid sampler, in particular of the immersible type. The apparatus comprises a rack, along the length of which are stations for securing respective self-contained sample vessels. A mechanism is arranged along the rack for selectively and sequentially collecting a sample at each station. Typically, a sample collecting vessel is mounted at each station, and the mechanism operates to close each sample vessel along the rack. In another aspect the invention is a robotic platform equipped with the fluid sampler.
