Abstract:
Disclosed herein is a downhole mud motor. The mud motor includes, a stator, a rotor in operable communication with the stator, a polymer in operable communication with the stator and the rotor, and a plurality of carbon nanorubes embedded in the polymer.
Abstract:
An acoustic transducer on a downhole tool sends an acoustic wave through a sensor plate in contact with drilling fluid. Vibrations of the sensor plate are indicative of the impedance of the borehole plate that may be associated with gas influx. A processor analyzes the vibrations and uses an estimated Q of the vibrations to determine gas influx.
Abstract:
A formation pressure testing while drilling device on a bottomhole assembly makes measurements of fluid pressure during drilling of a borehole. Based on the pressure measurements, drilling direction can be altered to maintain the wellbore in a desired relation to a fluid contact. Acoustic transmitters and/or receivers on the bottomhole assembly can provide additional information about bed boundaries, faults and gas-water contacts.
Abstract:
An apparatus for use downhole is disclosed that in one embodiment may include a rotor having an outer lobed surface disposed in a stator having an inner lobed surface, wherein the inner lobed-surface or the outer-lobed surface includes a sealing material on a first section thereof and a metallic surface on a second section thereof.
Abstract:
In one aspect, a drilling apparatus is provided, where the drilling apparatus includes a fluid pump disposed in a main wellbore, a lateral well in fluid communication with the fluid pump and a drilling assembly disposed in the lateral well, wherein the drilling assembly is configured to receive a fluid from the fluid pump to power the drilling assembly and to transport cuttings from the drilling assembly to the main wellbore. The drilling apparatus further includes a sealing mechanism disposed in the main wellbore, the sealing mechanism being configured to direct the cuttings in the fluid downhole of the sealing mechanism.
Abstract:
A formation pressure testing while drilling device on a bottomhole assembly (21) makes measurements of fluid pressure during drilling of a borehole (15). Based on the pressure measurements, drilling direction can be altered to maintain the wellbore (15) in a desired relation to a fluid contact. Acoustic transmitters and/or receivers (59,61) on the bottomhole assembly can provide additional information about bed boundaries, faults and gas-water contacts.
Abstract:
A tool for measuring formation properties in situ. The tool includes a solid state neutron detector and a neutron source disposed on a drill string or wireline. The detector includes a boron carbon surface deposited on a substrate, and the surface can be multi-planar or curved for allowing sensitivity in more than one direction.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method capable of incrementally decreasing the borehole pressure at a variable rate by controlling a test volume within the borehole. The system includes an incrementally controllable pump, closed loop feedback and a controller for drawing down the pressure of a test volume to a level just below formation pressure. This incremental drawdown system will significantly reduce the overall measurement time, thereby increasing drilling efficency and safety.
Abstract:
The present invention provides methods of forming mud motors. In one method, rollers are urgingly stroked against a tubular member having a mandrel therein that has an outer profile which is the inverse of the desired profile of the stator. In another method, rollers are urged and rotated radially on the tubular member with the mandrel disposed in the tubular member. In yet another method, dies are pressed against the tubular member having a mandrel with a desired outer profile. In another method, a molten metal is deposited over a mandrel with an outer lobed surface that is substantially the inverse of the desired inner profile of the stator housing. The mandrel is then removed, leaving a metallic longitudinal member having an inner profile defined by the outer profile of the mandrel. The mandrel may also be a preformed liner of desired thickness having an inner and outer lobed surface. In each of these methods, the inner surface of the resulting member has the profile defined by the outer profile of the mandrel. The inner surface of the resulting member then may be coated or lined with a suitable material such as an elastomer or a ceramic. The stator inner surface may also be metallic. A suitable rotor is then disposed in the stator to form the drilling motor.
Abstract:
A system for reverse circulation in a wellbore include equipment for supplying drilling fluid into the wellbore bit via at least an annulus of the wellbore and returning the drilling fluid to a surface location via at least a bore of a wellbore tubular. The system also includes devices for controlling the annulus pressure associated with this reverse circulation. In one embodiment, an active pressure differential device increases the pressure wellbore annulus to at least partially offset a circulating pressure loss. In other embodiments, the system includes devices for decreasing the pressure in the annulus of the wellbore. For offshore application, annulus pressure is decreased to accommodate the pore and fracture pressures of a subsea formation. In still other embodiments, annulus pressure is decreased to cause an underbalanced condition in the well.
