The invention is a contact die (10) for dispensing of flowable material on a substrate (14). The contact die (10) includes at least one die block including a first internal passage (24). A die lip portion is disposed on the die block having a lateral dimension. A first plurality of orifices (30) is disposed through the die lip portion (26) proximate to each other and in communication with the internal passage (24) to dispense flowable material as a single strip on the substrate. A first edge is disposed on one lateral side of the first plurality of orifices to direct the flowable material.
Abstract:
Continuous void-free uniform coatings are formed on substrates (24) of limited length. The substrate is wrapped around a mounting roll (20) and nipped between the mounting roll and one or more pick-and-place contacting rolls (12, 14). Coating liquid is applied to the substrate or to a pick-and-place roll, preferably as a pattern of stripes. The mounting roll (20), substrate and pick-and-place rolls (12, 14) are caused to rotate for a plurality of revolutions. Wetted surface portions of the pick-and-place roll repeatedly contact the substrate, the coating is repeatedly picked up from and placed onto the substrate, and the coating becomes more uniform. Extremely uniform and extremely thin coatings can be quickly and easily obtained, with easy adjustment of the final coating thickness.

An apparatus for providing thin films comprises a roller press (10) having a base (12) and a frame supporting a pair of stacked rollers (22, 54). The roller press (10) is provided with a slider (84) and tilt arm (76) connected to the base (12) and frame which are capable of imparting a tilt to the frame causing the top roller (54) to rotate around the axis defined by the bottom roller (22), thereby decreasing the effective weight of the top roller (54) as felt by the bottom roller (22). In order to apply thin films to a component, a roller applicator apparatus is provided which comprises a base (212) and a frame (220) supporting a roller (237) at an elevation above the base (212). A part carrier assembly (248) is attached to a slider (240) capable of linear movement under the roller (237).

A coater head for applying coating to a size press roll of a size press coater, the coater head has a flow passage with a metering device at its outlet end and a metering chamber immediately adjacent to the metering end. A shear developing passage delivers coating to the metering chamber and a mixing passage leading into the metering chamber mixes fresh coating with return coating on the surface of the roll to carry the fresh coating to the outlet end of the metering chamber. The metering chamber is dimensioned to form a stable vortex within the chamber thereby to improve the uniformity of the coating wet film.

Application apparatus for the coating of a travelling web (5), comprising a support roll (3) and a predosage roll (7'), said rolls forming a nip between themselves through which the web is brought to travel, further comprising an application device (21) by which sizing agent or coating agent (13) can be transferred onto the web, and means (19) for final evening of material applied onto the web, characterized in that the application device (21) is designed in such a manner that it transfers directly onto the travelling web (5) said material (13) in a certain excess before entering the nip where predosage is provided before the subsequent and final evening of applied material.

Devices for coating paper or cardboard webs with a metering system which contains a doctor blade (2) as the metering component are known. The doctor blade (2) is held by a bed (3) of elastic, preferably rubber-elastic, material fitted in an adjustable holder (5) and supported on the rear away from the doctor blade (2) by a pressure hose (6) extending transversely across the working width. According to the invention, the pressure hose (6) is divided transversely over the working width into individual pressure chambers (6.1-6.4) to which compressed air can be separately applied.
