Abstract:

Abstract:
Method is provided for applying a cement mixture to a honeycomb body including the step of aligning a first end of the honeycomb body with respect to a first longitudinal axis of a first support member. The method further includes the step of aligning a second support member with respect to the second end of the honeycomb body. The second support member is allowed to move relative to the first support member such that a second longitudinal axis of second support member is not coincident with the first longitudinal axis. The method further includes the step of fixing the position of the honeycomb body with respect to the first support member and the second support member. The method still further includes the step of applying a cement mixture to the honeycomb body. An apparatus is provided that is configured to apply a cement mixture to a honeycomb body
Abstract:
A wiper apparatus (10) for spreading, smoothing or otherwise wiping liquid coating material on a surface (13) of a moving strip (12), such as, for example, a moving strip of metal. The wiper apparatus (10) comprises first and second felt wipers (15) for alternatively wiping the liquid coating material on the surface of the moving strip (12); and a wiper support (16) coupled to the first and second wipers (15) for rotation of the first and second wipers (15) to move the first and second wipers (15) between a first orientation wherein the first wiper (15) is adjacent the surface of the moving strip (12) for wiping the liquid coating material on the surface of the moving strip (12) and the second wiper (15) is spaced from the surface of the moving strip (12), and a second orientation wherein the second wiper (15) is adjacent the surface of the moving strip (12) for wiping the liquid coating material on the surface of the moving strip (12) and the first wiper (15) is spaced from the surface of the moving strip (12). The apparatus (10) includes at least one shaft (26, 28) coupled to the first and second wipers (15) for rotating and second wipers to move the first and second wipers (15) between the first and second orientations. The wiper apparatus (10) may also include a lift assembly (18) having a pair of arms (128, 132) for moving the first and second wipers (15) between an engaged position in which one of the first and second wipers (15) is adjacent the surface of the moving strip (12) and a disengaged position in which both of the first and second wipers (15) are spaced from the surface of the moving strip (12). The wiper apparatus (10) may further include a releasable lock for releasably locking each shaft (26, 28) to a further respective arm to prevent rotation of the shaft (26, 28) relative to the arm (128, 132).
Abstract:
An ultrasonically assisted coating apparatus (10', 26', 36', 44', 50', 60') and method for applying a smooth layer of coating material (18) on a surface of a moving web (16) are disclosed. A coating material (18) is applied onto one web (16) surface. An ultrasonic energy generator (20, 22, 40) excites the line of initial contact between the coating material (18) and the web (16) at a uniform ultrasonic intensity selected in combination with the properties of the coating material (18). The coated web (16) has a thin, uniform crossweb thickness with low thickness variations.
Abstract:

Abstract:
There is disclosed a method of printing onto the surface of a substrate, which method comprises i) coating a donor surface (12) with a monolayer of particles, ii) treating the substrate surface (80) to render at least selected regions tacky, and iii) contacting the substrate surface with the donor surface to cause particles to transfer from the donor surface only to the tacky regions of the substrate surface. After printing on a substrate (20), the donor surface (12) returns to the coating station (14) where the continuity of the monolayer is restored by recovering with fresh particles the regions of the donor surface exposed by the transfer of particles to the substrate.
Abstract:
An apparatus is disclosed for coating a surface that is movable relative to the apparatus with a layer of thermoplastic particles, the particles adhering more strongly to the surface than to one another. The apparatus comprises at least one spray head 1401 for directly or indirectly applying to the surface 12 a fluid stream within which the particles are suspended, a housing 403 surrounding the spray head(s) 1401 and defining an interior plenum 1406 for confining the fluid stream, the housing having a rim 1404 adjacent the surface that is configured to prevent egress of particles from a sealing gap defined between the rim of the housing and the surface to be coated, and a suction source connected to the housing to extract from the plenum 10 the sprayed fluid and particles suspended in the sprayed fluid. In operation, the suction source extracts substantially all particles that are not in direct contact with the surface, so as to leave only a substantially single particle layer adhering to the surface on exiting the apparatus.
