Abstract:
Swimming pool cleaners, and associated hoses and connectors used with swimming pool cleaners may include a lock mechanism for releasably locking multiple hose segments or other components together in varying, discrete locked positions, such that a user can adjust the connection between the components to obtain a fluid tight joint. In these or other embodiments, one or both components can include an improved sealing structure that may facilitate forming such a fluid tight joint.
Abstract:
The invention provides a swivel coupler (10), for connecting a pool cleaner operatively to a flexible hose. The coupler (10) includes two open ended tubular members (16, 18) arranged in end-to-end axially aligned relationship. A collar member (24) retains the tubular members (16, 18) and connects the tubular members together in a manner which permits relative rotation of the tubular members about an axis (20) and inhibits excessive relative axial displacement. A plurality of ball bearing elements (42) is arranged between opposed faces of the tubular members (16, 18).
Abstract:
A back-up valve (10) for a pressure type pool cleaner is series-connected in a water flow line conducting water under pressure to a pool cleaner head. Water flows via an inlet (14), through a generally axial flow turbine (26), and via flow passage sections (32) cyclically, alternatively via a first outlet (16) to the head, and via a second, back-up outlet (18) into the body of pool water. During a major portion of the cycle, flow is directed to the head for normal operation of the head. During a minor portion of the cycle, flow through the back-up outlet reverses the head. The turbine (26) is fully and symmetrically exposed to the flow. The turbine, via a high reduction gear train (28), drives a valve arrangement including a shutter having ports cyclically to direct water flow alternatively to the first outlet (16) and the second, back-up, outlet (18).
Abstract:
A valve kit for use with a suction pipe of a pool cleaner which includes a valve with a first inlet, an outlet, a by-pass inlet between the first inlet and the outlet and a valve member which is biased to close the by-pass inlet. The first inlet is releasably connectable to a suction pipe in a first mode, and a bend is releasably connectable to the first inlet and to the suction pipe in a second mode.
Abstract:
A hose joint 10 for a pool cleaner or other apparatus that includes at least two swivels 24, 26. The first swivel 26 is configured to rotate about a first axis 18 and the second swivel 24 is configured to rotate about a second axis 20 that is different from the first axis 18. In some embodiments, one of the swivels 24, 26 is configured to rotate approximately 360 degrees about its axis of rotation 18, 20. In this way, the hose joint 10 has at least two directions of freedom in at least two different planes that help the cleaner move independently from a hose 16 attached to the hose joint 10.
Abstract:
Embodiments of the invention provide a pumping system and a discharge vacuum relief valve for use in a hydraulic system including a safety vacuum release system pump to circulate water in a swimming pool and/or a spa. The hydraulic system includes one or more check valves located on a discharge side of the safety vacuum release system pump. The discharge vacuum relief valve is capable of venting a vacuum at the discharge side of the safety vacuum release system pump during a vacuum event at a suction side of the safety vacuum release system pump.

Abstract:
An automatic vacuum-relief apparatus (10) for liquid suction systems includes a vessel (30) defining a chamber (31) filled with liquid in communication with a liquid flow line (11), a rotary shaft (40) extending through the chamber to support a valve device (20) adjacent to the liquid flow line and to move the valve device to open a relief-air flow channel (14) to relieve increased suction caused by inlet blockage, and a piston (41) on the rotary shaft responsive to suction increases within the liquid flow line and chamber to actuate shaft rotation. The valve device, chamber and relief- air flow channel are configured and arranged to cause a spurt of liquid (110) from the chamber into the inlet (12) while the valve device is moving from its isolating position toward its opening position upon inlet blockage, whereby the spurt of liquid pushes the blockage away from the inlet and the relief air reduces the suction. The valve includes a liquid-flow barrier (22) secured with respect to the liquid flow line such that the barrier is in an open position allowing flow of liquid from the inlet to the outlet during normal operation and in a closed position isolating the inlet from the outlet in response to suction increases upon inlet blockage.
Abstract:
A fluid flow regulator useful with swimming pool suction cleaners includes a flow passage conduit for connection between a suction pump and the pool cleaner. A flow bypass conduit is connected to the flow passage conduit for injecting an ambient fluid into a bypass flow passage. A valve operates within the bypass flow passage with a spring carried entirely within the bypass passage for urging the valve toward a seated position. An adjustment knob acts on the spring for modifying a biasing force on the valve urging the valve toward the seated position in opposition to a pressure from a fluid flow within the flow passage urging the valve to the open position.
Abstract:
An automatic pool cleaner accessory is provided comprising a tubular assembly for connection to, or for inclusion in, a pool cleaner suction hose. The tubular assembly includes first and second coaxial tubular members which are relatively rotatable about a common axis and means for automatically effecting angular movement of the first tubular member relative to the second tubular member about said axis generally to vary the relative angular positions of the two members. The accessory operates on the basis that an automatic pool cleaner suction hose will generally have asymmetric portions in its length which are other than perfectly straight and the effect of rotating the hose about its own axis at a position remote from the suction head will have the effect of changing the influence that these asymmetric portions have on the "random" movement of the pool cleaner.
