Abstract:
The specification discloses a seal member for selectively completing a fluid passageway defined between an upstream member and a downstream member separated by an intermediate space, the seal member comprising an elongate stem portion dimensioned to be movably positionable in an opening defined through the upstream member between opposite first and second surfaces thereof, the elongate stem portion having provided at one end thereof a resiliency deformable, radially-extending flange and at the other end thereof a sealing face, and a fluid passageway defined through the stem portion between the flange and the sealing face. The flange is deformable under fluid pressure to increase the area of contact between the flange and the first surface of the upstream member and to simultaneously move the stem portion within the opening defined in the upstream member so as to bring the sealing face into sealing contact with an opposing surface of the downstream member across the intermediate space.
Abstract:
A shroud, such as for an airborne wind-turbine for converting wind energy into another form of energy, such as electrical energy. The shroud has a ring-like shape with an airfoil cross-section and defines an interior volume for containing a lighter-than-air gas. The shroud includes a central opening oriented along a longitudinal axis of the shroud. The shroud is configured to produce an asymmetric moment of left and right lateral sections thereof, which asymmetric moment yields a restoring moment that automatically orients the longitudinal axis of the shroud substantially optimally relative to a prevailing wind direction.

Abstract:
A cam phaser is disclosed for adjusting the angular position of a camshaft relative to a crankshaft. In a first embodiment, a rotatable camshaft has an interior passageway and at least one cam operative to effect actuation of an engine valve. A first drive member is connectable to the crankshaft for rotational movement therewith. The first drive member is independently rotatably associated with the camshaft. A piston member is axially moveably disposed within the camshaft interior passageway and associated with the camshaft for rotation therewith. The piston member is further associated with the first drive member for rotation therewith and axial movement relative thereto. Axial movement of the piston member effects a change in the angular position of the first drive member. In a second embodiment, a rotatable tubular member has an interior passageway. A first drive member connectable to one or the other of a crankshaft or camshaft for rotational movement therewith is independently rotatably associated with the tubular member. A second drive member connectable to the other of a camshaft or crankshaft for rotational movement therewith is rotatably fixed relative to the tubular member. The first drive member is independently angularly positionable relative to the second drive member. A piston member is axially moveably disposed within the tubular member interior passageway and associated with the tubular member for rotation therewith. The piston member is further associated with the first drive member for rotation therewith and axial movement relative thereto. Axial movement of the piston member effects a change in the angular position of the first drive member relative to the second drive member.
Abstract:
The specification discloses a method and apparatus for irradiating foodstuffs. The method comprises the step of exposing a foodstuff to be irradiated to x-rays having energies selected exclusively from the range of below approximately 250 KeV, for a period of time and at at least a first intensity sufficient to provide a desired dose of radiation to the foodstuff. The at least one x-ray tube is selectively capable of generating x-rays having energies exclusively in the range of below approximately 250 KeV.
Abstract:
The invention is a pallet pin which contains an integral floating magnet assembly. The floating magnet assembly is mounted within the internal cavity of the pin and is attached to a longitudinally extending member which is coaxial with the farmer housing. The floating magnet assembly is provided with low-friction rollers which engage a cylindrical track extending longitudinally from the top to the bottom of the housing. The magnet assembly is thereby permitted to traverse freely the length of the interior of the housing of the device, permitting the magnet assembly to position itself in relation to an adjoining sheet of magnetic material, and to induce the upper sheets of a stack of magnetic materials to separate. The floating magnet assembly automatically repositions itself in relation to the top of the stack as sheets are removed from the stack. The magnetic assembly includes one or more permanent magnets to provide the magnetic forces to separate the sheets, without the requirement for external power, such as that required by electromagnets. The entire assembly is mounted within a housing having a handle, and one or more locating pins for the purpose of positioning the entire assembly in relation to a pallet which sheets of magnetic material may be stored. This permits the invention to be used to both restrain lateral movement of the sheets of magnetic material and providing separating forces to separate the upper sheets from the stack so that they may be gripped, otherwise manipulated for removal from the stack.
