Abstract: An implant (10) is provided for replacing the proximal portion of a femur having a substantially intact natural femoral neck (42) and a lateral side opposite the femoral neck (42), with a bore (52) extending from the femoral neck (42) through a lateral side of the femur (40). The implant comprises a sleeve (14) having a flange (28) for engaging a proximally facing resected surface (50) of the neck surrounding the bore (52) in the femur and having a bore (26) with an inwardly tapered conical portion. A shaft member (12) having a longitudinal axis (22), a distal end (38), and a proximal end (18) is placed in the bore through the femur. The shaft member (12) has an intermediate conically tapered male portion (20) for coupling to the conically tapered bore (26) of the sleeve and a proximal end (18) having a conically tapered portion. A head member (16) having a distal end and a proximal substantially-spherical portion and a tapered recess (24) is configured for positioning in a natural or prosthetic hip socket.

Abstract: A high strength hydrogel having a constant swelling pressure upon implantation and thereafter is formed by preparing a hydrogel solution and then injecting the solution into a mold and cause to gel. The molded gel is then washed in a saline solution from about one day to twelve weeks, after which the gel is irradiated for sterilization purposes, dehydrated and packaged. The pre-treatment with the use of a physiologic solution results in an implant which exhibits a constant swelling pressure profile after implantation.

Abstract: An apparatus for facilitating fusion of adjacent bony structures includes an implant body dimensioned for positioning between adjacent bone structures to maintain the bone structures in desired spaced relation during interbody fusion. The implant body has an outer wall and an external threaded configuration disposed on the outer wall. At least one concave surface at least partially extends along the implant body. The concave surface advantageously reduces the transverse cross-sectional dimension of the implant member thereby facilitating placement of the implant member in restricted intervertebral areas. in addition, the concave surface enables placement of a pair of implants in nested side-by-side relation. Preferably, the threaded configuration has portions removed along an arc section of the outer wall thereby defining a series of generally longitudinally aligned concave surfaces in individual turns thereof. A system and method for facilitating fusion of adjacent vertebrae is also disclosed.
