Abstract:
The presence of conjugated unsaturated carbonyl compounds leads to colour deterioration in alcohols under acid conditions. The unsaturated carbonyl compounds tend to be formed by side reactions in olefin oligomerisation, hydroformylation and hydrogenation reactions used in alcohol manufacture, and alcohols with improved colour stability are obtained by their removal from the olefin and/or the alcohol. An improved method for measuring conjugated unsaturated carbonyl compounds is provided. It is suitable for improving the method of alcohol manufacture, in particular in combination with an also improved method for measuring carbonyl compounds.
Abstract:
Oxidative recovery methods that use oxygen or air for recovery of homogeneous metal catalysts, such as cobalt catalysts, used in for example hydroformylation processes, can be hazardous. Explosive or flammable gas mixtures may be generated inside the process equipment, which can deflagrate upon any ignition source such as a static electricity discharge. The use of a flammable diluent has been found to be a very effective way of optimizing the recovery method, by bringing the resulting gas mixtures above their upper flammability limit. The offgas produced is then also easier to dispose of as a fuel, as compared to when a non-flammable diluent is used.

Abstract:
The present invention results to an improved and environment friendly method of producing dimethyl phthalate of about 99% purity from naphthalene based chemicals, said method comprising steps of mixing phthalic anhydride with methanol in the ratio ranging between 2:3 to 3:2, adding catalyst(s) to the mixture wherein, the ratio of phthalic anhydride and the catalyst is ranging between 3:1 to 15:1, adding a promoter to the resultant of step (b) wherein, the promoter is in the range of 1.5 to 2.0% by weight of phthalic anhydride, refluxing the resulted mixture at a temperature ranging between 60 to 100°C, for time duration ranging between 6 to 12 hrs. in the presence of benzene, wherein the ratio of benzene phthalic anhydride is in the range of 1:5 to 2:1 to obtain distillate, neutralizing the residue with about 10% caustic soda, extracting the neutralized residue with the benzene, distilling at the temperature ranging between 140 to 150°C under 10mm of mercury to obtain dimethyl phthalate.
Abstract:
A process for producing a composite mixed ester suitable for use as a plasticizer having improved nonvolatility as compared with dibasic acid diesters which have excellent general-purpose plasticizer properties and have been used in a large amount but have come to be regarded as endocrine disruptors. The mixed ester is equal to the dibasic acid diesters in production cost and performance even when it contains none of these diesters. Also provided is a composition. Dibasic-acid diesters volatilize according to their vapor pressures, while polymers have nonvolatility and reduced toxicity according to their molecular weights. However, polymers have poor plasticizer performance. Although composite esters having an intermediate molecular weight may meet the requirement, they are difficult to produce and have poor profitability. The process comprises subjecting acids, a diol, and a terminal alcohol to dehydrating esterification and subsequently subjecting the excess alcohol to transesterification. Thus, a composite mixed ester is advantageously produced, which is a composition represented by RPX1-2AXn-1AR and which contains residues of the two dibasic acids bonded in such a manner that one or two residues of one of the acids and one or two residues of the other occur alternately.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a process for the production of an ester, including reacting an alcohol with a carbonyl-like compound in the presence of a first esterification catalyst; and adding a second esterification catalyst to the reaction mixture at some time after initiation of the esterification reaction. The staged addition of the esterification catalyst according to the present invention provides a reduced reaction time to achieve a targeted conversion to esters.
Abstract:
The invention relates to complex mixtures of semi-esters from polybasic organic acids and long-chain alkanols, alkoxyalkanols and diols, especially viscous oils stemming from oxosynthesis. The invention further relates to the production and the use thereof as inexpensive, highly effective emulsifiers, and especially as processing agents in leather manufacture.
Abstract:
A composition which comprises 100 parts by weight of a phthalic acid monoester and 2 to 50 parts by weight of an alcohol. The composition is excellent in flowability and storage stability and is suitable for use as a feed material for the production of phthalic diesters because of its transportability and storage stability.
