A cathode slurry for use in a lithium battery, comprised of: about 60 % to about 70 % by weight electrolytic manganese dioxide; about 5 % to about 10 % by weight carbon; and about 25 % to about 35 % by weight of an electrolyte, said electrolyte comprised of: about 10 % to about 40 % by weight ethylene carbonate, about 60 % to about 90 % by weight propylene carbonate, and about 0.5 to about 1.5 moles of triflate salt.

A compound that generates a fire-retardant gas upon decomposition has general structure (I) wherein, X is N, C, S, NO, N2, CO, SO; A is substantially any organic moiety including alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, cyclic, fused cyclic, heteroatoms, ketals, acetals or alcohols. B and B are substantially any organic moiety including alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, cyclic, fused cyclic, heteroatoms, ketals, acetals or alcohols, also including oxygen, hydrogen and null; and n is an integer from 0-100. Preferred gases generated thereby include CO, SO2, SO3, NO, N2O, NO2 and N2. It is also preferred that the generated gas assists in formation of a solid electrolyte interface (SEI) between the electrolyte and at least one of the electrodes. It is most preferred that the cell have a conductivity greater than 10 S/cm.

The use of vanadium oxide iron and/or aluminium bronzes as a cathode material in electrochemical generators is described. The cathode material is a vanadium oxide bronze having formula: M1x1M2x2V2O5, wherein M1 is trivalent aluminium or iron, M2 is a metal different from M1 having valency n and chosen from alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals and aluminium, and x¿1? and x2 are such that 0.06 « x1 « 0.13; 0 « x2 « 0.20; and 0.27 « 3 x1 « nx2 « 0.39; and may be combined as a cathode (9) with an Li or Li alloy anode (5) and with an electrolyte consisting of lithium perchlorate in propylene carbonate.
