The present invention relates to structures and components for protecting organic light emitting diodes from environmental elements such as moisture and oxygen. According to a first aspect of the invention, top-emitting, high-resolution, OLED structures (100) are provided which include a metal foil substrate (110); a planarization layer (112) disposed over the metal foil substrate; an OLED stack (115) (which includes lower (1281e) and upper (128ue) electrodes as well as an organic region (114) disposed between the electrodes) disposed over the planarization layer (112); and a multilayer barrier region (120) disposed over the OLED stack (115). A second aspect of the invention is directed to flexible, top emitting OLED structures (110) which include the following: thin substrate region (110) (i.e., a substrate having a thickness that is less than 200 microns); an OLED stack (115) disposed over the flexible substrate region (110); a transparent upper barrier region (120) that cooperates with the flexible substrate region (110) to encapsulate the OLED stack (115), thereby protecting it from outside species such as water or oxygen; and a polymeric reinforcement layer which has a Young's Modulus ranging from about 0.3 to 7 GPa, which is disposed (i) below the substrate region, (ii) above the upper barrier region (in which case it is transparent), or (iii) both below the substrate region and above the upper barrier region.

An organic electronic device has an improved contrast ratio by lowering background luminescence from ambient radiation source(s). Background luminescence may be lowered by increasing absorption of ambient radiation, by reducing reflection of ambient radiation, or a combination of the two. Lower background luminescence can be achieved by using one or more black layers or lattices that are incorporated within the organic electronic device. Also, a large number of materials can be used for high absorbance layers. A change in materials for the electronic device may not be needed, and therefore, new material compatibility issues may not arise. Further, from an electronic performance standpoint, some layers may not be too sensitive to thickness and a plurality of narrow ranges of thicknesses may be used for a layer to allow a layer to have the proper electrical and optical properties. The embodiments obviate the need for a circular polarizer.

An active organic EL device comprises an organic EL element containing an organic luminescence medium between an upper electrode and a lower electrode, and thin-film transistors for driving the organic EL element. The light emitted from the organic EL element passes through the upper electrode, which includes a main electrode consisting of transparent conductor, and an auxiliary electrode consisting of low-resistance material. This arrangement provides an increased aperture ratio. If the arrangement is adapted to pass light through the upper electrode, the surface resistance of the upper electrode can be reduced, resulting display of high and uniform brightness.
