Advantageously, the wireless device is configured so that a user can provide a triggering input to the wireless device when the user hears a musical piece of interest being played back on an audio system that is external to the wireless device and proximate to the user. In response, the wireless device initiates communication with a server, which communication includes sending a generic identification request to the server. The server knows which musical piece is currently playing on the audio system, e.g., based on connectivity between the server and the audio system, and the server returns identification information for the currently playing musical piece. This approach obviates the need for the wireless device to capture and process audio data, or to use fingerprint information derived from captured audio data.

Methods include the steps of: providing fingerprint signatures of each frame in a broadcast video; and designating at least two repeat fingerprint signatures upon detecting at least one fingerprint-signature match from the signatures. Preferably, methods further include: prior to the designating, determining whether the fingerprint signatures correspond to a known ad based upon detecting at least one fingerprint- signature match of the fingerprint signatures with pre-indexed fingerprint signatures of pre-indexed ads. Preferably, method further include: creating segments of the fingerprint signatures, ordered according to a timeline temporal proximity of the fingerprint signatures, by grouping at least two fingerprint signatures based on a repeat temporal proximity of at least two repeat fingerprint signatures respective of at least two fingerprint signatures. An apparatus for determining playback points such as the start of a television programme within recorded media content extracts timings of features from within the content and compared these against reference data. The reference data is retrieved using an identifier of the content so that the reference data compared is the reference data relevant to the content. The comparison of the timings of the features allows the relative offset between the recorded content and the reference data to be determined and thereby the start of a television programme within the recording to be determined so that the apparatus can automatically start playing from the beginning of the programme. The features for which timings are used may include shot changes, subtitles and other characteristic features within the recording.

The video signal receiver is configured to receive a video stream containing advertising content and program/movie content from a broadcast source. The video storage controller is configured to identify locations of advertising content interspersed among program/movie content in the received video stream, and to record addressable chapter marks for the identified locations of the advertising content and a video stream that is based on the received video stream into the memory. The addressable chapter marks may be displayed on a display and used by a viewer to jump playback of the video stream between the chapter marks.
