Abstract:
A metal closure is described, in the form of a foil lid (1) bonded to a metal annular component (such as a container body or separate intermediate ring). The foil lid (1) and annular component are made of dissimilar metals, with the closure adapted to prevent bimetallic corrosion at the interface between the dissimilar metals of the foil lid and the annular component. The closure is adapted such that the lid comprises a peripheral wall which is upstanding from the annular component such that a gap is maintained between the annular component and an exposed metal peripheral edge of the lid. Further aspects of the invention include: i. a method for making such a metal closure; and ii. an apparatus for making such a metal closure.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for forming a shell with a central panel and a chuck wall is provided. The apparatus and method employ the use of a biasing member to selectively bias and control movement of the inner pressure sleeve and a die core having an outer diameter equal to or greater than the outer diameter of the punch core. The apparatus and method can also be employed in a single action press or a double action press.
Abstract:
Abstract:
Transfer apparatus and method are provided from first (15A, 16A) to second (15B, 16B) stations of tooling in a cap (11) making press. This cap is biased against the first upper tools by a first airstream (50) introduced under the cap and moves upward with the first station punch (45). As the punch approaches its top location, a transfer airstream (52) begins while the first airstream is still on, and moves the cap out through a transfer chute (18) to the second station. The cap departs the chute and passes detents (67) on a pair of closed retention fingers (60) which define an extension of the transfer path from the chute into the open second station tools. A vacuum (85) applied to a port in the second station punch then holds the cup against the rising upper tools. When the punch clears the closing fingers and approaches its top location, an ejection airstream (87) commences to propel the finished cup via a discharge chute (19).
Abstract:
A method of making a pressure-resistant easy-open end for a container is performed on a conventional easy-open end of the type that has a double-seaming portion, an end panel (60) and a safety fold (72). The safety fold as is conventional includes an intermediate panel (54) that is unitary with and overlies the end panel and that is connected to the end panel by a first bead (58), a top panel (56) that is unitary with and overlies the end panel and that is connected to the end panel by a second bead (52), and a transition region (57) that is unitary and connects the top panel to the double-seaming portion. The method involves performing an operation on the conventional end so that the top panel (56) is reformed to reside substantially within a second plane (80) and so that the first plane (74) and the second plane (80) intersect at the end panel at a location that is radially inward from said first bead (58). The result is a modified easy-open end that exhibits markedly improved resistance against pressure-induced failure.
Abstract:
A container end is provided so that upon opening, a generally triangular vent region (362) is formed with an apex pointing rearwardly toward the head space to vent the container during pouring. The container end achieves a fast and smooth pour with a relatively small increase in the opening area (322) without increased bursting, buckling or opening failures associated with relatively larger openings. The opening area is defined by a score line (318) having first (342) and second (346) rupture end points with a gate axis (348) therebetween along which the opening area (322) pivots after rupture of the score line (318).
Abstract:
A can end (1) is formed with a score (3) by pressing the end between a score die (2) and an anvil (13). The score die comprises a truncated "V"-shaped projection (9) having a first score sidewall (10) typically at about 55 DEG to the longitudinal axis of the projection, and a second score sidewall (11) typically at about 15 DEG to the longitudinal axis. The score die has a horizontal land portion (12) between the first and second sidewalls. The score die produces a score (3) having sidewalls (16 and 17) which are at different angles to the longitudinal, and this helps to prevent the formation of "angel hairs", i.e. thin slivers of the film (23) coating the base of the score which can otherwise become detached on operation of the tear panel (15).
Abstract:
A can end (13) is manufactured by forming an end shell (5) comprising a seaming flange, chuck wall, centre panel and countersink etc. The end shell is converted to an easy open can end by forming a score and raising a rivet on the centre panel, and attaching a tab to the rivet. The end is subsequently reformed by moving the centre panel (9) relative to the seaming flange (7) to raise the centre panel to a height above the level of the seaming flange. The end is secured to a can body which has been filled with product, and then reformed a second time to lower the centre panel (9) to a height below the level of the seaming flange (7), in order to reduce the headspace within the package.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for the production of a lock ring using a wireshaped material which is welded so as to form a ring, and then transformed by several operations into a ring with shaped cross section. As a result of this transformation, the sealing area (9) has greater wall thickness, so as to avoid a sharp edge (13) which could injure the user, as well as to guarantee the resistance necessary to attach or remove a lock membrane (31).
