Abstract: Tunable VCSELs (TVCSELs) employing expanded material systems with expanded mechanical/optical design space for semiconductor DBR mirrors on GaAs substrates. One is the InGaAs / AlGaAsP material system. It adds indium In to decrease InGaAs H-layer bandgap for higher refractive index and higher DBR layer refractive index contrast. Adding phosphorus P gives independent control of bandgap and strain of AlGaAsP low refractive index L-layers. The tensile strain of AlGaAsP L-layer compensates compressive strain of InGaAs H-layer and lowers the cumulative strain of the multilayer DBR structure. Another option is the InGaAsN(Sb) / AlGaAsP material system, where both types of layers can be lattice matched to GaAs. It uses indium In and nitrogen N, and possibly antimony Sb, to get independent control of strain and bandgap, and thus refractive index, of dilute nitride InGaAsN(Sb) H-layers, with lower bandgap and higher refractive index than starting GaAs. Using expanded material system enables reliable DBR mirrors with higher reflectivity and spectral bandwidth and tunable VCSELs with wider tuning range.

Abstract: A u-shaped crossmember is employed in the construction of a chassis frame of a medium or heavy duty battery electric vehicle. In the design, frame rails are joined by at least one of U-shaped cross members, which comprises a main center section and four or more support arms, which extend away from the main center section of the cross member in the transverse direction of the longitudinal frames. The cross members, in one example, include two brackets. Each bracket has two arms connected by a center main portion. These brackets can be fabricated by creating a plurality of angles in several locations that add up to 90-degrees. The angled design allows the transmission of longitudinal and lateral forces to both frame rails. Due to U-shaped nature of the cross member, the body of the chassis frame is opened to allow for installation of components, subassemblies, and especially battery packs, etc.

Abstract: A method for studying cell viability and protein aggregation involves establishing a Fabry Perot etalon signal within an optical spectroscopic feature, e.g., in the near infrared region. Protein aggregation and cell viability can be reflected by changes observed in the magnitude of the Fourier Transform peaks observed in the frequency or space domain associated with the contrast of the etalon. In short, the presence of viable cells and protein aggregates can degrade the etalon contrast of an etalon window. In some cases, the concentration of cells and monomeric protein can be measured as well.

Abstract: A building automation system generates occupancy information for occupants of spaces of a building (e.g. quantity, identity and/or location of the occupants) based on occupancy sensors in the spaces. The occupancy sensors capture speech sounds originating from one or more occupants of the spaces and/or ultrasonic emissions originating from one or more user devices of the occupants are via microphone arrays. Audio data based on the captured sound is then generated. Position information for the sources of the sound is determined based on the audio data, and the audio data is enhanced based on the position information via a beamforming process. Occupancy information for the spaces is generated based on the audio data. Environmental conditions of the spaces are controlled based on the presence, absence, position, orientation, distribution and/or preferences of the occupants in the space.

Abstract: A sensing and alert system is installed in a plurality of electrical switchgear cabinets. Each switchgear cabinet includes at least one high-voltage circuit breaker, and each switchgear cabinet is in communication with a central programmable logic controller (PLC) configured to activate and deactivate the high-voltage circuit breaker in the corresponding switchgear cabinet. The sensing and alert system includes a time of flight (ToF) sensor arranged to capture real-time image data, a lighting module affixed to an inside portion of the switchgear cabinet, and a processor operatively coupled to the ToF sensor and to the lighting module. The sensing and alert system is affixed to an inside portion of each switchgear cabinet. The processor compares real-time image data from the ToF sensor to the stored calibration image data and transmits an alarm if the difference is greater than a predetermined amount.
