    Abstract: An electrode structure has a pair of electrode catalyst layers and a polymer electrolyte film held between the electrode catalyst layers. The polymer electrolyte film contains 5 weight% of coordinated water of proton of a sulfonic acid group and composed of a fluorine−containing ion−conductive polymer. The content of fluorine in the polymer electrolyte film to the electrode catalyst layer lies in the range from 0.2 to 2.0. The polymer electrolyte film is composed of a sulfonate of a copolymer of repeating units expressed by formulae (1) and (2). The electrode catalyst layer contains platinum at 0.01 to 0.8 mg/cm 2 , and the average particle diameter of carbon particles of the carrier lies in the range from 10 to 100 nm. The polymer electrolyte film is made from a solution of the sulfonate and dried. The film contains 3 to 15 weight% of the solvent after dried. The electrode structure is completed by applying to it a current of 0.1 A/cm 2 or more in the humidified environment of a relative humidity of 60% or more for five hours or more. The electrode structure constitutes a fuel cell that generates power when an oxidizing gas is supplied to one side and a reducing gas is supplied to the other side.

    Abstract: Disclosed is an electrode electrolyte for use in a solid polymer fuel cell or the like. A solid polymer fuel cell has a pair of electrodes on both sides of a proton-conductive solid polymer electrolyte film and can generate electricity by feeding a fuel gas (e.g., pure hydrogen) to one electrode and feeding an oxidizing agent (e.g., air) to the other electrode, in which the electrodes are composed of an electrode electrolyte having an electrode catalytic component (e.g., platinum) dispersed therein. In a conventional solid polymer fuel cell, a perfluoroalkylsulfonate polymer has been used as the electrode electrolyte. This material has excellent proton conductivity, but is very expensive. Further, because of a large amount of fluorine atoms present in the molecule, the material is poor in combustion property and therefore makes it difficult to collect or recycle platinum or the like used in the electrode electrolyte. These problems can be overcome by using an electrode electrolyte which comprises a polymer having a polyphenylene backbone and a side chain having a sulfonate group and a side chain having a nitrogenated heterocyclic group or the like.

    Abstract: A solid polymer type fuel cell which comprises: a pair of electrodes (2) and (3) having a catalyst layer (5) comprising catalyst particles which comprise a catalyst support and a catalyst deposited thereon and have been united with one another with an ion-conductive polymer binder; and a polymer electrolyte film (1) sandwiched between the electrodes (2) and (3) on their sides having the catalyst layer (5).
