Abstract:
Embodiments of systems, methods, and machine-readable media are disclosed for enabling a uniquely-identifiable item as fare media in a transit system. Embodiments generally include collecting a unique identifier from the item, and sending the unique identifier, and other data, to a virtual fare device. The virtual fare device can use the unique identifier to access historical and/or other information associated with the unique identifier, calculate a fare, and/or update the information in a manner similar to how a physical fare device updates information on physical fare media, such as a stored-value card. The virtual fare device then can send data, such as priced transaction data including fare information, to other systems and/or servers of the transit system for further processing.
Abstract:
A functional, porous, interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) includes a first polymer network in the form of a porogenic support fabric (PSF) composed of linear polymers in the form of a pre-formed network comprising a fibrous composite and a second polymer network synthesized, gelated, and/or cross-linked in the presence of the first polymer network to form a system of polymers which have their respective chains held in place by means of permanent physical entanglements produced by the interweaving of the component polymer networks. The IPN is modified by dissolving and dispersing a portion of the PSF fibers, the dispersible fiber network (DFN) to form a pre-designed interconnected pore structure. The resultant porous, supported, second polymer network has convective flow, diffusive flow, and high capacity, and may include functional capture chemistries to provide an adsorptive media for chromatography and filtration of various compounds including biomolecules.
Abstract:
Provided are methods of using electromagnetic waves for detecting metal and/or dielectric objects. Methods include directing microwave and/or mm wave radiation in a predetermined direction using a transmission apparatus, including a transmission element; receiving radiation from an entity resulting from the transmitted radiation using a detection apparatus; and generating one or more detection signals in the frequency domain using the detection apparatus. Methods may include operating a controller, wherein operating the controller includes causing the transmitted radiation to be swept over a predetermined range of frequencies, performing a transform operation on the detection signal(s) to generate one or more transformed signals in the time domain, and determining, from one or more features of the transformed signal, one or more dimensions of a metallic or dielectric object upon which the transmitted radiation is incident. A system and method for remote detection and/or identification of a metallic threat object using late time response (LTR) signals is also disclosed.
Abstract:
In a gaming environment where there is provided a virtual three dimensional gaming space in which a player can move, there is provided a method of presenting a player with a virtual store, the method including providing a virtual gaming space in which a virtual store of an advertiser of a known brand is represented, permitting a player to enter the virtual store and applying predefined 'in-store' gaming rules to a set of game rules.
Abstract:
A multi-channel lock-in amplifier system (100) for use in cell (104) analysis is disclosed. The system (100) may include a cartridge (106) having one or more flow cells with each flow cell (104) containing a cell for analysis. An oscillating electric field (152) may be applied across each flow cell (104) at one or more excitation frequencies in order to detect the responses of the cell (104) either in electrical impedance at frequencies that provide a non-linear response.
Abstract:
The invention concerns benzamide compounds of formula (I), wherein R 1 is a C-linked pyrazole ring, which is optionally substituted by one or more groups selected from C 1-4 alkyl, C 3-4 cycloalkyl, C 1-4 alkoxy and C 3-4 cycloalkoxy; or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or pro-drug form thereof. The invention also concerns processes for the preparation of such compounds, pharmaceutical compositions containing them and their use in the manufacture of a medicament for use as an antiproliferative agent in the prevention or treatment of tumours or other proliferative conditions, which are sensitive to the inhibition of histone deacetylase (HDAC).
Abstract:
A railcar asset management system proactively issues an alert or task when a predetermined event occurs. The system may receive information regarding the location and status of a railcar from sensors on the railcar that may include a telematics sensing unit. A database in the railway telematics system stores the data regarding the railcar location and status information. The system determines whether an event has occurred and issues the proactive alerts and/or task. The system may communicate the proactive alert via e-mail, paging, PDAs or by cell phone and may provide interactive preconfigured web pages.
Abstract:
A system and method for automatically loading a pre-selected value onto a fare card allows a patron to enter or leave a transit system gate without having to add a fare value at a vending machine. The automatic loading provides added convenience and security for the patron. The vehicle for the automatically-loaded value is either a credit card that is pre-authorized for use by the patron, or the patron’s available benefits. The automatic loading process may be utilized to autoload values of benefits only, or to load values from a combination of benefits and credit card transactions. The pre-selected autoload value is loaded onto the fare card at the gate before confirmation that the credit card transaction is authorized. The gate sends a message to a transit central computer that an autoload has occurred. The central computer determines whether benefits are available to fill the request, and forward a request for the difference to a credit processing company.
Abstract:
Disclosed are novel nucleic acids encoding proteins and polypeptides related to bone morphogenetic protein-1 (BMF1) and to vascular endothelial growth factor E (VEGF-E) and platelet derived growth factor (PDGF). Also disclosed are vectors, host cells, antibodies, and recombinant methods for producing these nucleic acids and polypeptides. Methods of use include detecting and staging of cancers.
