Abstract: Apparatus for aligning a plate in a desired plane of a machine comprises a plate (44) rotatable about at least one axis (42), mountable on a first machine part (40), a location device (48) mountable on a second machine part (47), wherein the location device on the second machine part may be brought into register with the plate in at least one location (57, 46) such that the plate rotates about the at least one axis until it is aligned with the plane defined by the at least one location of register between the location device and the plate. The plate may be rotatable about one or two axes. The plate may be provided with a scale (16) and a readhead (18) may be mounted on the second machine part. A docking station (20) may be provided to align the readhead with the scale whilst it is being connected to the second (20) part of the machine.

Abstract: A mounting device for a telescopic ball-bar has a hexagonal shank (20) which is retained in the jaws (14) of a chuck (12) on the spindle (10) of a lathe. A supporting bracket (24) extending from the shank (20) carries a magnetic socket (22) in one of a plurality of locations (26), and receivably mounts one end of the ball-bar for universal pivotal motion. The configuration of the bracket (24), the spacing between the socket (22) and the shank (20), and the orientation of the socket (22), are such that the other end of the ball-bar, which is universally pivotally mounted to the tool post (16) of the lathe, may execute a circular trajectory of greater than 180 DEG , which trajectory intersects the axis of rotation (A) of the lathe.
