Abstract: An open spiral strand (1) formed of a plurality of layers, each layer (25, 26, 27) being formed of a plurality of individual wires (33, 34). At least one inner layer (25) is adapted to have a greater resistance to radial forces than other layers (26, 27), such that the inner layer (25) is better able to resist the higher radial forces that are generated within the inner layers (25, 26, 27), the strand (1) has seven or more layers provided radially outwardly of the adapted inner layer (25). The inner layer (25) is adapted by including shaped wires (34) that provide contact surfaces between layers (25, 26, 27) that have a greater surface area.
