Abstract:
A portable communications device receives from a user a first sequence of symbols that includes a phone number that corresponds to a destination number for a call (302). If the first sequence of symbols includes a predefined universal international access code symbol followed by the phone number, the device sends an address message corresponding to the first sequence of symbols to a communications network (304); and if the first sequence of symbols does not include the predefined universal international access code symbol followed by the phone number, the device determines a second sequence of symbols that correspond to the destination number (306), including the predefined universal international access code symbol if the portable communications device is presently located in a country other than the home country of the portable communications device, and sends an address message corresponding to the second sequence of symbols to the communications network (314).
Abstract:
Among other disclosed subject matter, a method includes obtaining, in a mobile device, power information indicating a detected power of respective signals received from multiple transmitters. The method includes determining a location of the mobile device using a formula that uses: locations of the multiple transmitters, a first function of the power information and a second function of respective locations of the multiple transmitters. The method can include recording the determined location.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for executing a first executable code image having a first version number into a memory of a device in an attempt to establish an operating environment of the device are described. The first executable code image retrieves a second version number from the second executable code image after successfully authenticating the second executable code image. If the first version number and the second version number do not satisfy a predetermined relationship, the second executable code image is prevented from being loaded by the first executable code image.
Abstract:
Systems and methods for activating a mobile device for use with a service provider are described. In one exemplary method, a mobile device having a currently inserted SIM card may be prepared for activation using a signing process in which an activation server generates a signed activation ticket that uniquely corresponds to the combination of the device and SIM card, and that is securely stored on the mobile device. In another exemplary method the mobile device may be activated in an activation process in which the device verifies an activation ticket against information specific to the device and SIM card, and initiates activation when the verification of the activation ticket is successful.
Abstract:
Systems, methods and computer readable media for providing or managing or using voicemails are described. In one embodiment, a method includes receiving, at a first data processing system, data representing an expiration time of a voicemail left for a user of the first data processing system and storing the data representing the expiration time for later use by the first data processing system. Systems, media, and other methods are also described.
Abstract:
A computer-implemented method for use in conjunction with a computing device with a touch screen display comprises: detecting one or more finger contacts with the touch screen display, applying one or more heuristics to the one or more finger contacts to determine a command for the device, and processing the command. The one or more heuristics comprise: a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a one- dimensional vertical screen scrolling command, a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a two-dimensional screen translation command, and a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a command to transition from displaying a respective item in a set of items to displaying a next item in the set of items.

Abstract:
A system is described for allocating bandwidth comprising a transport layer to support a first socket connection for a first application and a second socket connection for a second application; and a socket prioritization module to allocate relatively more bandwidth to the first socket connection relative to the second socket connection, wherein allocation of bandwidth is based on one or more characteristics of the first application and/or the second application.
