Abstract: An improved medium for selectively culturing and detecting B. anthracis is provided. The medium comprises at least one polymyxin antibiotic, typically colistin, in combination with at least one dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor, typically trimethoprim, to provide the selectivity necessary to differentially culture B. anthracis from complex environmental samples. Methods for making the improved medium, as well as methods for utilizing the improved medium to selectively culture B. anthracis are also provided.
