Methods, systems, and apparatus for use in a communication system utilizing multiple bands to improve transmission error rates are disclosed. Error rates are improved by mapping (204) a portion of an input bit stream within a data stream to s first and second bands of the multiple bands, transmitting (206) the portion of this bit stream in the first and second bands, receiving (208) bit streams in the first and second bands corresponding to the portion of the bit stream, demapping (210) the first and second bands, and processing (212) the first and second band bit streams to yield the original portion of the input bit stream.

A broadcast gateway system for interaction of iDTV and home networks via a broadcast gateway includes a broadcast carousel, an interactive DTV (iDTV) platform, and a home networking (HN) platform. Interaction of the broadcast carousel, the iDTV platform, and the HN platform allows applications, content, and services to be delivered to a home network via a DTV broadcast stream.

A handheld device (12) integrates personal information scheduler (252) with a program list view (250) selection and operation of a wide variety of media devices. Specifically, the handheld device (12) includes a database containing program content downloaded during the vertical blanking interval (VBI) or from the Internet (174). Viewing the EPG database and personal calendar simultaneously, the user incorporates program into his/her personal schedule for viewing or recording. Further, the device is capable of analyzing usage patterns to set defaults of the handheld device, and other devices under its control, according to user preferences.

A portal system employs a handheld media delivery device (18) adapted to receive broadcast media content having media content information, adapted to formulate a request based on the media content information, adapted to communicate the request for additional media content to the portal system (23), adapted to receive the additional media content from the portal system (23), and adapted to deliver the additional media content to a consumer (32). The handheld device has a request processor adapted to determine whether a connection to the portal system is available, queue requests locally, and store requests until the connection is available. The portal system includes an input adapted to receive a request for additional media content from the handheld media delivery device (18), and a retrieval mechanism adapted to retrieve additional media content based on the request. An output is adapted to communicate the additional media content to the handheld media delivery device (18), thereby supplementing the media content.
