The microdrive comprises a frame, a drive rod rotatably mounted to the frame, and a carriage with a threaded bore configured to hold the instrument in a position adjacent to a location on the surface of the body where the instrument is to be inserted. The drive rod has a threaded shaft, which passes through the threaded bore on the carriage so that the threads of the threaded shaft are in complementary contact with the threads of the threaded bore. Rotating the drive rod in one direction (e.g., clockwise) produces a force at the complementary contact that urges the carriage closer to the surface.
