Abstract:
The present invention relates to polymeric nanoparticles comprising salinomycin and methods for treating certain diseases comprising administering these polymeric nanoparticles to a subject in need thereof.
Abstract:
An inlet manifold for a multi-tube pulse detonation engine includes a vaneless diffuser disposed in a first zone to collect an air discharged from a compressor; a vaned diffuser including a plurality of guide vanes disposed in a second zone to slow the air from the compressor; a plenum disposed in a third zone located next to second zone to provide the air from the compressor to chambers; and a splitter disposed in a fourth zone to split the air from the compressor into an airflow required by each pulse detonation tube for detonation.
Abstract:
Nutrient material can be used for preventing or treating diseases such as neurodegeneration. Protein in a first portion of the material constitutes no more than 5 percent, and protein in a second portion constitutes at least 10 percent, of the material's caloric content. Use of the material can be such that: (a) the first portion is administered such that person's intake of protein is restricted to less than 30 grams per day during a lower-protein period of at least 48 hours; (b) nutrition is administered such that the person's intake of carbohydrate constitutes at least 40 percent of the person's energy intake during the lower-protein period; and (c) the second portion is administered during a higher-protein period, after the lower-protein period, that between 24 hours and 14 days long, such that the person receives a higher daily intake of protein than the person received during the lower-protein period.
Abstract:
An apparatus for sampling and storing biological fluids from a human or animal subject is provided. In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the apparatus includes a main body, lancet carrier or hub, lancet, lancet trigger, capillary tube, and sample compartments for collecting and storing dried blood and other bodily fluids. The lancet hub supports a lancet and provides for moving the lancet longitudinally between a first retracted position and a second extended position. The device includes a capillary tube having an internal diameter sized to draw and retain fluid from a contacted source using capillary action. The main body of the apparatus further includes a sample compartment for holding sampling and storage materials. In at least one embodiment of the present disclosure, the sample compartment can be accessed by lifting sample compartment lid. Also included is a new "fan" or "daisy" shaped collection material format for use in collecting and preserving samples.
Abstract:
An insert for sports gear and footwear has a compliant casing formed of fabric sheeting that incorporates regions of fused or otherwise integral regions of activated carbon. A desiccant such as silica gel in the form of spheroidal beads or other granules is loosely enclosed inside of the casing. The activated carbon has an affinity for odor-causing constituents such as organic compounds, and extracts airborne odor-causing constituents as air enters the casing. Inside the casing, the desiccant extracts airborne water vapor. The two-stage removal of odor-causing constituents and water vapor rapidly and effectively extracts moisture and odors. The silica gel and activated carbon are porous and have high surface areas available for adsorption, whereby the insert is adapted to maintain moisture and odors at low levels during long-term storage.
Abstract:
A flow conditioner includes a body composed of an array of vanes generally parallel to the direction of fluid flow. The vanes create a plurality of chambers to effectively reduce large scale vortices in the flow. The vanes have surfaces with perforations to allow pressure regulation between chambers to effectively reduce asymmetric flow and reduce drag. Additional preferred features include an acoustic choke created by a reduction in cross-sectional flow area at the entrance and the exit of the flow conditioner with circular plates. The plates have rough edges to increase production of micro-vortices.
Abstract:
System and method for the determination of a coagulation parameter comprising a disposable test element (2) and an instrument (1) for evaluation thereof. The coagulation time is determined at a non-standard temperature different from a standard temperature for the respective coagulation parameter, said non-standard temperature being measured by a temperature measurement device (7) of the instrument, the instrument (1) has a non-volatile memory (18) containing data which define a mathematical relationship of coagulation time versus temperature which relationship is independent of the individual patient whose blood is examined, and the coagulation parameter for the standard temperature is calculated from the coagulation time measured at said non-standard temperature, using said mathematical relationship.
Abstract:
A brake control system (10) for a wheeled vehicle includes a field programmable gate array (12) configured to perform the algorithm of brake control subsystems in a typical brake control system for a wheeled vehicle. The brake control subsystems typically include anti-skid control, brake temperature monitoring, built-in tests, and, in the case of an aircraft, nose wheel steering. The system also includes wheel speed sensors (14), brake temperature monitors (16), brake valves and associated control circuits, and brake valve monitors (20) respecting brake valve current and voltage. The use of field programmable gate arrays to configure a brake control system avoids the obsolescence and shortened life of control systems previously dependent upon microprocessors and the like.
Abstract:
The subject invention is directed to a rheology-modified ethylene polymer having less than 0.5 weight percent gel, a composition distribution breadth index (CDBI) greater than 50 percent, and a molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) of less than 4.0, which is characterized as having improved rheological performance and/or melt strength attributes relative to the unmodified polymer. The subject invention is further directed to polymer blends which comprise the rheology-modified polymers, and to a process for preparing the rheology-modified polymers.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to the use of an angiotensin II receptor antagonist in the manufacture of a medicament for the prevention of restinosis after angioplasty or bypass surgery.
