Abstract: There is provided a light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system and a method of operation of same. The LiDAR system is a neuromorphic LiDAR system-on-chip (SOC) may include a CMOS chip that includes a field analog vision (FAV) module for generating transformed point clouds in a Cartesian coordinate system and a silicon photonics chip that includes an optical computing system for performing computations of layers of a neural network model to process the transformed point clouds in a Cartesian coordinate system with minimum latency. The LiDAR system can be configured as a hybrid 2.5D integrated circuit or a hybrid 3D integrated circuit which reduces a size of the LiDAR system.

Abstract: A photonic device for multiplying quantities, such as vectors and matrices, in the optical domain is provided. Each of a set of input waveguides can be coupled to each of a set of output waveguides using a respective photonic processing component. Each photonic processing component couples to an output waveguide using a contra-directional coupler, to mitigate back-coupling of other signals on the output waveguide into the photonic processing component. Photonic processing components can include an attenuator which attenuates an input optical signal by a controlled amount, to perform multiplication. The intensity of the input optical signal is set to another controlled amount for the multiplication. Signed multipliers and multiplicands can be implemented using sets of photonic processing components. An input splitter can implement a signed multiplier. Pairs of photonic processing components can share the same attenuator. A readout device includes balanced photodetectors.

Abstract: A method of quantum key distribution making use of 2-qubit entanglement, by which one entangled qubit is sent from an operator O to Alice and the other entangled qubit is sent from operator O to Bob, making for key-sharing among three parties (multi-user quantum key distribution, i.e. MU QKD). Alice and Bob each measures a respective sequence of qubits randomly along either one of two states, records the measurements in a respective list, and encodes the bits in an encoded list. The encoded lists are sent to operator O for entanglement to be verified with the CHSH inequality. Bob's verified list is sent to Alice and vice-versa, allowing Alice and Bob to further verify correlation. Non-entangled bits are rejected until Alice and Bob have a similar key, being a reconciled quantum-based key as sought.

Abstract: An array of single photon avalanche diodes (SPAD) is divided into subarrays, and each subarray is activated in sequence while remaining subarrays are recharged. As a whole, the SPAD array performs as a continuously operating photodetector with improved performance, including lower power requirement, lower noise, lower capacitive loading, and other benefits. The system can be integrated in electro-optical architectures based on electrically modulated optical elements such as weighted microring resonators, to perform optical computations with increased efficiency, in particular multiply-and-accumulate operations (MAC). Expected applications include neuromorphic computing, telecommunications and other processing intensive computations.

Abstract: A waveguide is coupled at both ends to a microring (MRR) modulator in order to form a Mach-Zehnder interferometer out of the resulting unit. The coupled waveguide can be modulated independently from the MRR modulator itself with either an in-resonance photoconductive heater or a geometrically suitable PN junction. During modulation with an applied voltage to the coupler, an independent modulation can be applied to the MRR in order to compensate for wavelength shifting. Ideal lengths for the coupler are identified, as well as a spiral configuration to reduce the coupler's footprint on a photonic integrated circuit. The resulting device has reduced cross-talk between channels of a cascaded MRR system. A second coupler can be coupled to each MRR symmetrically so as to reduce insertion losses, allowing for an increased weight range at the drop and through ports.

Abstract: Aspects of the present application provide methods and devices for using a combined quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and amplitude phase shift keying (APSK) modulation scheme in a hybrid modulation form in order to benefit from advantages of each respective modulation scheme. The proposed hybrid modulation scheme is less sensitive to phase noise and has lower peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) than QAM and has very similar performance as QAM with respect to additive white guassian noise (AWGN).

Abstract: A single-layer substrate integrated directive broadside beam leaky-wave antenna is provided. Opposite ends of a leaky-wave structure are fed with anti-phase versions of a common signal, resulting in broadside frequencies being set apart from the open stopband. To achieve this, the common signal can be split into two equal length paths, one including a perfect electrical conductor (PEC) reflector and the other including a perfect magnetic conductor (PMC) reflector. Alternatively, the common signal can be split into two paths which differ in length by a half wavelength. A power splitter and feed horns can be used in the respective paths. The leaky-wave structure may have transverse slots which increase in width toward a midpoint of the structure. The antenna can be formed in a single planar portion of a lithographic structure, for example by patterning an upper conductive layer thereof.
