Abstract: An RF transmitter (100) for transmitting a QAM signal includes a baseband signal generator (101) to produce a baseband modulation signal, a phase shifter (133) to apply a change in phase affecting the baseband signal or a signal derived from it or to mixed with such a signal, a phase shift controller (131) to apply a control signal to control the phase shifter, and an analyzer (126) to analyze the baseband signal to detect low signal periods when a parameter which is a function of amplitude of the signal is not greater than a threshold, the phase shift controller being operable to receive from the analyzer an indication of the low signal periods and to apply the control signal so that the change in phase is applied by the phase shifter only during a selected period when the affected signal has a low power corresponding to a low signal period of the baseband signal.

Abstract: A super-linear feedforward amplifier (100), for amplifying radio-frequency input signals produced in one or more frequency channels over an input band, includes a radio-frequency power amplifier (108), which amplifies the signals. Abstract: A TETRA device, system, and Direct Mode Operation (DMO) method are presented in which Differential Binary Phase Shift Keying (DBPSK) modulation is used to extend the communication range of direct mode operation TETRA devices. The protocol during various stages of a communication session uses a DBPSK modulation scheme in which one bit is used per symbol and the burst length is twice as long as standard DMO, so that 510 bits are present in consecutive slots. This permits the number of bits per TETRA frame to be the same as standard DMO. The protocol includes specific implementations for ongoing calls, call setup, and master-slave changeover. Although immediate switching between adjacent double slots is not supported using the modulation scheme, the enhanced DMO can use a standard Tetra protocol except for a call setup sequence.
