Abstract: Methods for treating a tar sands formation are described herein. Methods for treating a tar sands may include heating a portion of a hydrocarbon layer in the formation from one or more heaters located in the portion. The heat may be controlled to increase the permeability of at least part of the portion to create an injection zone in the portion with an average permeability sufficient to allow injection of a fluid through the injection zone. A drive fluid and/or an oxidizing fluid may be provided into the injection zone. At least some hydrocarbons are produced from the portion.

Abstract: A system for heating a subsurface formation is described. The system includes a first elongated heater (246) in a first opening in the formation. The first elongated heater includes an exposed metal section in a portion of the first opening. The portion is below a layer of the formation to be heated (240) . The exposed metal section is exposed to the formation. A second elongated heater is located in a second opening in the formation. The second opening connects to the first opening at or near the portion of the first opening below the layer to be heated. At least a portion of an exposed metal section of the second elongated heater is electrically coupled to at least a portion of the exposed metal section of the first elongated heater in the portion of the first opening below the layer to be heated.

Abstract: The invention provides systems that include a plurality of heat sources (102) configured to heat a portion of a formation; at least one production well (106) in the formation, a pump system, and a production conduit coupled to the pump system. The bottom portion of the production well is a sump positioned in an underburden of the formation that is below the heated portion of the formation. Fluids are allowed to flow from the heated portion of the formation flow into the sump . The pump system in combination with the production conduit transport fluids in the sump out of the formation. The invention also provides methods to remove a portion of the fluids from the formation.
