Abstract:
Implantable biomaterials, particularly hydrogel substrates with porous surfaces, and methods for enhancing the compatibility of biomaterials with living tissue, and for causing physical attachment between biomaterials and living tissues are provided. Also provided are implants suitable for load-bearing surfaces in hard tissue repair, replacement, or augmentation, and to methods of their use. One embodiment of the invention relates to an implantable spinal disc prosthesis.

Abstract:
A method of reinforcing a metal panel or pipe of an existing structure comprising the steps of attaching a reinforcing metal layer to said metal panel or pipe in spaced apart relation to thereby form at least one cavity between inner surfaces of said metal panel and said reinforcing metal layer, injecting an intermediate layer comprised of an uncured plastics material into said at least one cavity, and curing said plastics material so that it adheres to said inner surfaces of said metal panel or pipe and said reinforcing metal layer.
Abstract:
A connecting member for structural sandwich plate members comprises a prismatic metal body having one, or preferably two, tapered edges which provide landing surfaces and weld preparations for the face plates of the structural sandwich plate members.
Abstract:
A method of treating a subject having a musculoskeletal'disorder includes administering to a subject's articular site in need thereof an effective amount of a hyaluronic acid (HA) composition. In one embodiment, the HA composition includes an HA derivative, wherein carboxyl functionalities of the hyaluronic acid derivative are each independently derivatized to include an N-acylurea or O-acyl isourea, or both N-acylurea and O-acyl isourea. In another embodiment, the HA composition includes a crosslinked HA gel that is prepared by reacting an uncrosslinked HA with a biscarbodiimide in the presence of pH buffer in a range of between about 4 and about 8. The composite can optionally include at least one second bioactive agent other than the HA derivative, such as a steroid.

Abstract:
A composite laminate panel suitable for building containment vessels, and in particular, suitable for building double hull oil tankers. The laminate has two facing metal layers structurally bonded to a polyurethane elastomer core. The laminate is used in various hull components, such as the hull plates, longitudinal girders, transverse frames and bulkheads. The laminate is used to build the inner hull and outer hull, and may be used to build the structural supports between the inner and outer hulls. The innermost layer of inner hull contains the ship's cargo. The elastomer core of the inner hull laminate isolates the innermost hull skin from cracks, thereby preventing a loss of cargo such as oil into the environment, when the outer hull is pierced, penetrated or ruptured in an accident or grounding.
Abstract:
A hatch cover for sea-going cargo vessels is arcuate in profile and fabricated from sandwich plates comprising upper and lower steel plates and a composite core of solid elastomer and rigid foam. The hatch covers are stackable and can be sealed by a simple tensioned strip with gaskets.
Abstract:
Barge double hull sections wherein at least part of the double hull is comprised of first and second layers and an intermediate layer of elastomer material bonded to the first and second layers. By manufacturing double hull walls of such three layered structures, the stiffness of the hull as compared to hulls of the prior art can be significantly increased, thereby decreasing the amount of separate stiffeners required in the hull structure.
Abstract:
Various rolled or extruded profiles (1c, 1d) with weld locations are used to connect together structural sandwich plate members comprising first and second outer metal plates (21) and an elastomer core (22) bonded to said outer metal plates (21) with sufficient strength to transfer shear forces therebetween.
