Abstract:
A battery system which includes a plurality of cylindrical cells, including a first cylindrical cell and a second cylindrical cell, an electrical tab that is connected to the first cylindrical cell and the second cylindrical cell using spot welding, and a battery management printed circuit board, where the electrical tab provides a connecting surface for a battery management signal between (1) the first cylindrical cell and the second cylindrical cell and (2) the battery management printed circuit board.
Abstract:
A first power source, a second power source, and a power controller are provided, where a vehicle that includes the first power source, the second power source, and the power controller is capable of flying in a transitional mode between a hovering mode and a forward flight mode. The power controller selects one or more of the first power source and the second power source to power a rotor included in the vehicle during the transitional mode.
Abstract:
A commanded control signal is compared against an adaptive control signal in order to detect a rotor strike by a rotor included in an aircraft, wherein the adaptive control signal is associated with controlling the rotor and the adaptive control signal varies based at least in part on the commanded control signal and state information associated with the rotor. In response to detecting the rotor strike, a control signal to the rotor is adjusted in order to reduce a striking force associated with the rotor.
Abstract:
Hand controls for an aircraft, including a single axis hand control which is configured to control movement of an aircraft along a vertical axis where the aircraft includes a plurality of rotors that are attached to the aircraft at a fixed position and the plurality of rotors rotate independently of one another., The hand controls further include a three axis hand control which is configured to control movement of the aircraft within a plane defined by a roll axis and a pitch axis, as well as about a yaw axis.
Abstract:
Techniques described here provide a rotor and a method of making a rotor. In an embodiment, a method of making a rotor includes forming a magnet array by assembling a plurality of magnets into the magnet array, providing pre-preg adjacent to the magnet array, co-curing the magnet array with the pre-preg, and magnetizing the magnet array subsequent to the formation of the magnet array.
Abstract:
A multicopter aircraft with boom-mounted rotors is disclosed. In various embodiments, a multicopter as disclosed herein includes a fuselage; a port side wing coupled to the fuselage; and a starboard side wing coupled to the fuselage. Each of the wings has mounted thereto one or more booms, each boom having a forward end extending forward of a corresponding wing to which the boom is mounted and an after end extending aft of said corresponding wing to which the boom is mounted. The aircraft further includes a first plurality of lift rotors, each rotor in said first plurality being mounted on a forward end of a corresponding one or said booms; and a second plurality of lift rotors, each rotor in said second plurality being mounted on an after end of a corresponding one or said booms. Each rotor produces vertical thrust independent of the thrust produced by the other rotors.
Abstract:
A multicopter aircraft with a wide span rotor configuration is disclosed. In various embodiments, a multicopter as disclosed herein includes a fuselage and a plurality of rotors. The plurality of rotors includes inner rotors and outer rotors, with the inner rotors being substantially surrounded by the outer rotors or the fuselage. The inner rotors and the outer rotors may be tilted based at least in part on their arrangement in relation to the fuselage.
Abstract:
A propeller includes a blade free to rotate about a longitudinal axis of the blade. The propeller also includes a mechanical stop positioned to engage mechanically a first portion of the blade and/or a first structure coupled mechanically to the blade when the blade is in a first position. The propeller also includes a magnetic stop positioned to engage magnetically a second portion of the blade and/or a second structure coupled mechanically to the blade when the blade is in a second position. The blade rotates to the first position against the mechanical stop when the propeller is rotated at a first rotational speed and the blade rotates to the second position against the magnetic stop when the propeller is rotated at a second rotational speed in a same direction as when the blade is in the first position.
Abstract:
A configuration instruction associated with configuring a plurality of batteries which supply power to a plurality of motors in a vehicle is received. The batteries are configuring as specified by the configuration instruction, where the batteries are able to be configured in a plurality of configurations, including: a first configuration where at least some of the batteries are electrically connected together in parallel and a second configuration where at least some of the batteries are electrically connected together in series.
Abstract:
A composite structure with an integrated hinge is disclosed. In various embodiments, the composite structure includes a plurality of layers of fiber reinforced polymer material; and a hinge structure comprising one or more layers of bendably flexible hinge material a first region of which is interleaved between adjacent layers of said layers of fiber reinforced polymer material comprising the composite structure and bonded to said adjacent layers by bonding material comprising said composite structure, and a second region of which extends beyond said layers of fiber reinforced polymer material comprising the composite structure.
