    Abstract: Aluminium sheet suitable for use as a lithographic plate support has a surface that is uniformly rough by virtue of: a rippled topography having an aspect ratio of at least 1.3 on a scale of 5 - 200 mu m; and a superimposed pitted structure on a scale of 1 - 20 mu m. A method of making the aluminium sheet involves pack rolling two aluminium ribbons to generate facing surfaces having the transverse rippled structure; followed by a small amount of a conventional roughening or graining treatment to develop the pitted structure.

    Abstract: A method of electrochemically roughening an aluminium metal sheet for use as a lithographic plate support comprises subjecting the sheet in an electrolyte to an alternating current treatment. Treatment is performed in the presence of at least one added component, present in the sheet or in the electrolyte, selected from Hg, Ga, In, Sn, Bi, Tl, Cd, Pb, Zn and Sb. The added component accelerates the electrograining, so that only 35-75 kCoulombs per square metre of electricity is required.

    Abstract: Aluminium alloys are described which after suitable processing can be used to produce lithographic printing plates of improved stoving resistance. The alloys consist essentially of at least 99.00 % by weight of aluminium, from 0.02 to 0.15 % by weight in total of zirconium and/or hafnium and from 0.05 to 0.25 % by weight of manganese, with the remainder being incidental impurities. Improved stoving resistance is particularly shown with 0.02 to 0.08 % zirconium and from 0.05 to 0.15 % manganese, especially when stoving takes place at 240 DEG C or above.

    Abstract: Aluminium sheet is electrochemically roughened for use as a lithographic printing plate support or as capacitor foil. The alternating current used for electrochemical roughening is initially biased in a first way, e.g. anodically, and then in a second way, e.g. cathodically. Each biased current is sufficient at least to initiate formation of a pitting structure on the surface of the sheet. The method allows improved control over the pitting structure and more rapid electrograining of the sheet.
