The use of hydroxytyrosol or an olive juice extract containing hydroxytyrosol for improving muscle differentiation and thus improving or maintaining the body's adaptation to exercise is disclosed. The pharmaceutical and nutraceutical compositions comprising hydroxytyrosol useful for conditions characterized by altered muscle differentiation especially under inflammatory conditions, such as delayed onset muscle soreness subsequent to strenuous exercise or sarcopenia are provided.
