A liquid crystal device display (20) has a backlight unit (56) for providing illumination, a rear polarizer (50b) disposed proximate the backlight unit (56) for receiving the incident illumination and transmitting substantially polarized illumination, a liquid crystal spatial light modulator for forming a display beam by selective, pixel-wise modulation of the polarization of the substantially polarized illumination, and a reflective polarizer (52a) disposed between the liquid crystal spatial light modulator and a front polarizer (50a).
Abstract:
A liquid crystal device display (20) has a backlight unit (56) for providing substantially unpolarized illumination, a rear polarizer (50b) disposed proximate the backlight unit (56) for receiving the incident substantially unpolarized illumination and transmitting substantially polarized illumination, a liquid crystal spatial light modulator for forming a display beam by selective, pixel-wise modulation of the polarization of the substantially polarized illumination, and a reflective polarizer (52a) disposed between the liquid crystal spatial light modulator and a front polarizer (50a), the reflective polarizer (52a) reflecting a portion of dark state light back toward the backlight unit (56).
Abstract:
A brightness enhancement article for conditioning luminance from a light source (18) in a viewing direction is provided. A prism surface side (44) collects light from the light providing surface (14), where, in one embodiment, the prism surface side (44) has a series of substantially parallel grooves (30) forming a series of longitudinal trapezoidal prism elements (38). Each trapezoidal prism element (38) has a face plane (46) disposed toward the light source (18) and first and second legs (34,36) extending back from said face plane (46), respectively, forming first and second base angles β with the face plane (46), where both first and second base angles β satisfy: 90 degrees
Abstract:
A process for making a diffusely reflecting polarizer comprises the steps of arranging polymeric fibers containing certain discontinuous phase birefringent fibrils and forming a solid film. The fibers are dispersed in a polymeric continuous phase, and are arranged in a substantially parallel array. A diffusely- reflective polarizer employs the film to effect polarization.
Abstract:
A fiber comprises a birefringent fibril discontinuous polymeric phase dispersed in a continuous polymeric phase with prescribed matched and mis-matched refractive indices. A diffusely polarizing organic film, optical element, display, and method of making such a film are also disclosed.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a light redirecting article that redirects light toward a target angle, the light redirecting article having an input surface for accepting incident illumination over a first range of incident angles when in a first position and over a second range of incident angles when in a second position: the output surface having a number of light redirecting structures, each having a first exit surface sloping away from normal in one direction as defined by a first base angle β1, wherein the first exit surface redirects illumination with the light redirecting article in the first position, and a second exit surface sloping away from normal, in the opposite direction relative to the first exit surface, wherein the second exit surface redirects illumination with the light redirecting article in the second position and wherein first and second base angles β1 and β2 are unequal.
Abstract:
A display system includes a light writable display associated with an identification code and arranged to receive an image wise pattern of light to form an image on the display; a display writer for producing the image wise pattern of light for writing the image on the display; a scanner connected to the display writer for sensing the identification code; and a processor linked to the scanner and the display writer and responsive to the identification code for programming the display writer to write an image associated with the identification code.
Abstract:
An optical compensation film for Ordinary-mode Normally White Twisted Nematic Liquid Crystal Display comprises a particular arrangement of optically anisotropic layers containing positively birefringent material disposed on a substrate.
Abstract:
A method of making a glass article, for example a glass light guide plate comprising at least one structured surface including a plurality of channels and peaks. The glass article may be suitable for enabling one dimensional dimming when used in a backlight unit for use as an illuminator for liquid crystal display devices.
