The present invention relates to novel biologically active compounds being dicarboxylic acid bisamide derivatives of general formula (I), or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, which are capable of complexing or chelating metal ions, and the use thereof as an agent for the prevention and/or treatment of cardiovascular, viral, cancerous, neurodegenerative and inflammatory diseases, diabetes and age-related diseases as well as diseases caused by microbial toxins, and also alcoholism, alcoholic cirrhosis, anaemia, porphyria cutanea tarda and transition metal salt poisoning. The invention relates to novel derivatives of hemin of general formula (I) and to the production and use thereof as antibacterial and/or antiviral agents, including in the formulation of pharmaceutical compositions. Advantages of the novel antibacterial and antiviral agents on the basis of derivatives of hemin include the biocompatibility and biodegradability thereof and the high degree of effectiveness thereof against resistant bacteria and widespread viruses which are dangerous to humans, and the lack of toxicity.
