    Abstract: A cuffed silicone tracheostomy tube has two tapered recesses (17) and (18) on its outer surface in which opposite ends (7) and (8) of a resilient cuff 6 are bonded using an adhesive or solvent. Two shallow ribs (22) and (23) extend around the tube on the inner edge of each recess (17) and (18), projecting outwardly to prevent the adhesive or solvent spreading onto the inflatable portion (10) of the cuff (6). The cuff (6) has several shallow ribs (9) extending around the cuff and spaced along its inflatable portion (10) to promote even inflation.

    Abstract: A tracheostomy dilator is curved along its length having a tapering patient end region (5) at one end and an oppositely curved handle region (7) at its opposite end. A passage (10) extends rearwardly along the dilator from its patient end (4) and opens on a side of the dilator at an opening (12) in the handle region (7). The passage (10) is blocked rearwardly of the opening (12) by an insert (2) with a forward ramp surface (23), which directs a guidewire (30).     Abstract: An adjustable flange for a tracheostomy tube has a locking assembly (25) with two C shape clamp arms (26) and (27) hinged together at one end (28). A lever (50) with a threaded stem (51) extends through the opposite end of one arm (27) and into a threaded aperture (32) in the other arm (26). When the handle (55) of the lever (50) is inclined out of the plane of the locking assembly (25) it can be slid freely along the tracheostomy tube (1) for positioning. The locking assembly (25) is locked in position by rotating the handle (55) down to lie in the plane of the locking assembly. The flange (20) has two wings (22) and (23) connected with a central plate (20) by webs (42) and (43) of reduced width so that the webs flex to allow the wings to be lifted readily.

    Abstract: An emergency resuscitator has a casing (1) containing a cylinder (30) of compressed oxygen and apparatus (31) for regulating the oxygen and producing a controlled, cyclical delivery of breathing gas to a face mask (60). The upper surface (15) of the casing at one end (10) is shaped anatomically to support the head and neck of the patient. The other end (11) of the casing supports the various controls (13) and instructions (44) as to how to use the resuscitator. The lower surface (20) of the resuscitator has a slide (21) at one edge and a grip to resist movement during ventilation. By lifting one end of the casing the grip can be raised off the floor and the weight of the resuscitator supported by the slide so that it can be easily slid under the patient's head.

    Abstract: An optical detector for particles, such as biological particles, has a transparent prism (1) with an upper surface (10) treated differently, such as with different antibodies, in several areas (17, 18, 19) so that different particles bind to different ones of the areas. A source (30) of monochromatic radiation directs a beam through a second face (11) so that it is incident on the underside of the upper surface (10) at an angle close to the angle of total internal reflection. Most of the radiation is reflected away from the upper surface and is absorbed in a radiation sink (32) on the third face (12) of the prism (1). Some of the radiation, however, is scattered by any particles bound to the antibody-treated areas.
