An optical disk substrate made from a polycarbonate resin prepared from at least one dihydric phenol selected from the group consisting of 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)butane, 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3-methylbutane, 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-4-methylpentane, and 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3,3-dimethylbutane, the dihydric phenol amounting to 30 to 100 % by mole of the whole dihydric phenol component. The number of unacceptable surface irregularities of the substrate is 0 to 1, and the polycarbonate resin satisfies the requirements that (A) the specific viscosity measured as a solution of 0.7 g of the resin in 100 ml of methylene chloride at 20 DEG C is 0.2 to 0.4; (B) the number of insoluble particles measured as a solution of the polycarbonate resin in methylene chloride is not more than 25,000 per g of the polycarbonate resin in terms of the number of particles having an equivalent diameter of not less than 0.5 mu m and not more than 500 per g of the polycarbonate resin in terms of the number of particules having an equivalent diameter of not less than 1 mu m; and (C) the water absorption is not more than 0.2 % by weight. This substrate enables pits or grooves to be accurately transferred, is less likely to cause warpage derived from absorption of moisture, and has a high-density recording capacity. It has high functions suitable particularly for use as an optical disk substrate for video disks or the like.

An aromatic polycarbonate resin (PC) particulate characterized in that: (a) it is formed of numerous minute powdery particles, (b) it has a specific surface area of 0.05 - 2.0 m /g, (c) it has a bulk density of 0.3 - 0.8 g/ml, (d) it has an average particle diameter of 0.2 - 5 mm, (e) at least 90 % of the minute powdery particles have particle diameters of 50 mu m or less, and (f) the content of a halogenated hydrocarbon as an organic solvent is 50 ppm or less in terms of halogen. A process for producing the PC particulate which comprises: (1) the step (a) of preparing a PC-containing slurry or wet paste, wherein (i) the content of the organic solvent is 10 - 65 wt.% of the total amount of PC and the solvent, and (ii) the content of water is at least 5 % of the amount of PC; (2) the step (b) of atomizing the slurry or wet paste under shear to form minute powdery PC particles at least 90 % of which have particle diameters of 50 mu m or less; (3) the step (c) of pressing the minute powdery PC particles thus obtained to form agglomerates, wherein (i) the content of the organic solvent is 10 - 65 wt.% of the total amount of PC and the solvent, and (ii) the content of water is 5 - 120 wt.% of the amount of PC; and (4) the step (d) of crushing or cutting and drying the formed agglomerates of the minute powdery PC particles in an arbitrary order.

A method for recovering a resin from a resin plate made by coating at least one side of a water-swellable transparent resin substrate with either a thin-film metal layer or a printed coating layer or both of them, which method comprises the step of rolling the resin plate, the step of swelling the plate, the step of pressing the swollen plate, the step of contacting the pressed plate with hot water, and the step of removing the resin. The method enables the resin component to be recovered from a recording medium (e.g. disk) having a substrate made from a transparent resin such as a polycarbonate resin in a simplified process scarcely causing deterioration, thus permitting recycling thereof.

A method of recovering a resin from an optical type information recording medium, in which a metallic thin layer or a print coating layer covers at least one surface of a substrate of the resin, comprises the steps of (1) rolling the recording medium, (2) contacting the rolled recording medium with a heated water, (3) separating a coating film peeled off the recording medium, (4) grinding the recording medium, (5) contacting shreds of the recording medium with a heated water to remove metallic thin film components, and (6) separating the removed metallic thin film components from the shreds to recover and obtain the shreds. Thus it is possible to effectively remove the covering layer from the optical type information recording medium and recover the resin component in a selective and industrially advantageous manner.
