Abstract: A thread protector (30) for use on a sucker rod or a drill pipe (36) has a collet (32) with a plurality of collet segments (44) in which each of the plurality of collet segments has a protrusion (46) adjacent an end thereof, and a sleeve (34) overlying the collet (32) and movable between a first position and a second position. The second position compresses the plurality of collet segments (44) such that the protrusion (46) engages with the thread relief (48) of the sucker rod or drill pipe. This retains the sleeve (34) and the plurality of collet segments (44) over the threaded end of the pipe so as to protect the threaded end of the pipe. The sleeve is movable to the first position such that the protrusions of the plurality of collet segments release from the thread relief so as to allow the thread protector to be removed from the threaded end of the pipe.

Abstract: A universal thread protector (80) is provided for protecting either of the pin and box ends of a pipe (26). The thread protector (80) has a cap (82) with an open end and a closed end. A rubber seal element (88) is positioned within and adjacent to the open end of the cap. A ring member (86) is positioned against the seal element (88) between the seal element and the closed end of the cap. Bolts (92) are provided having an end positioned against the ring member (86). The bolts (92) are movable from an unactuated position to an actuated position wherein the bolt applies a force against the ring member when in the actuated position. As such, the ring member (86) pushes against the seal element (88) so as to deform or compress the seal element against the outer diameter of the pipe (26) positioned within the cap (82). A method of protecting the threaded ends of pipe is also disclosed.
