Abstract:
A slack adjuster for a fluid-actuated brake comprises a slack adjuster collet (24) having a tubular skirt and an enlarged ring section. The enlarged ring section has opposed axial stop faces notched therein that define a conical lift surface facing the tube axis. A forward stop face has a conical or beveled surface arranged to engage the conical or beveled surface on one stop face of the collet when the collet carried by the actuator rod reaches the forward stop face and a retraction stop face has a conical or beveled surface arranged to engage the conical or beveled surface on the other stop face of the collet when the collet carried by the actuator rod reaches retraction stop face. The conical or beveled surfaces are configured so that when they engage, the force of the collet on the push rod is reduced.
Abstract:
A pneumatic emergency brake assurance module comprises a high capacity transfer valve connected in a first position to the output of the variable load relay valve and in a second position connected to a source of emergency braking air pressure. A timing reservoir is in communication with the pilot port of the high capacity transfer valve. A check valve/choke circuit provides parallel connections between a double check valve and the output of the variable load relay valve such that flow from the variable load relay valve passes through a charging choke and opposite flow to the variable load relay valves passes through a dissipation choke.
Abstract:
An illuminated touch switch has a touch sensitive area and a plurality of light emitting diodes arranged in a predetermined pattern. The touch switch includes a first rigid circuit board with a first electrical conductor and a second flexible circuit board with a second electrical conductor separated by a spacer of a predetermined thickness. Both conductors are aligned with the touch sensitive area and are coupled from the applied pressure providing an output signal. Light emitting diodes illuminate a single color light to indicate an enabled condition of the touch sensitive area.
Abstract:
A capacitance based switch device employs an electric field imaging device electrically coupled via an electrical conductor to a conductive electrode member that is attached to the door or any other suitable surfaces. Such electric field imaging device generates a sine wave which is transmitted to the conductive electrode member and produces a surrounding electrical field. Any human body part which enters such electrical field will create a capacitance load due to the body being grounded to a surface. Reduction in distance between the body part and the conductive electrode will increase the capacitance and will decrease the voltage intermediate the resistor and conductive electrode which is an inverse function of the capacitance. Such change in voltage will be detected by a microcontroller by comparing voltages at each end of the resistor and the change exceeding a predetermined threshold will be associated with an output control signal.
Abstract:
A device for providing self-lubrication to a slackless coupling system for a railway vehicle, specifically an articulated connector. The device comprises a self- lubricating member having a predetermined size and shape. The self-lubricating member is integrally formed from a non-stick material. The self-lubricating member has an inner surface and an outer surface, whereby such non-stick material will provide sufficient lubrication between the inner surface of the self-lubricating member, and a first surface of a spherical member coming in contact with the inner surface of the self-lubricating member, thereby allowing unrestricted movement of such spherical member there against, thus causing a reduction in L/V ratio when such self lubricating member is used in such coupling system.
Abstract:
The present invention increases the capacity and resistance to closure of the draft gear assembly(10) wherein a portion of the lug supporting plates, usually the tapered plates (56), within the friction cushioning device (40) is tapered or angled to increase the side force on the movable plates which increases the draft gear assembly's resistance to closure and increases the capacity of the draft gear assembly (10). Additionally or alternatively a tapered or angled top surface on the housing's third horizontal rib (24) may be provided in the area that contacts or supports the bottom surfaces of the tapered plates (56). Providing a taper on the third horizontal lug which mates or cooperates with an angle on the bottom edge surface of the tapered plates (56) increases the side force on the movable plates during the application of a buffing shock to the draft gear assembly (10).
Abstract:
A friction-type draft gear assembly (10) includes a housing (12) having an open front and a closed rear end with a first and second rear portions (13, 15) and a pair of ledge members (14) disposed intermediate such first and second rear portions and enabling the draft gear assembly (10) to fit into a draft gear pocket of a predetermined length. The first rear portion (13) is adapted to receive a compressible cushioning element (18) with a seating arrangement abutting one end thereof which extends longitudinally from the second portion (15) of the closed rear end toward the open front portion (20). The open front end is adapted to receive a friction cushioning element (42) which has a spring release mechanism (76) for continuously urging the friction cushioning element (42) outwardly from the compressible cushioning element (18) thereby releaseing such friction cushioning element after compression of such draft gear assembly (10). The open front end may incorporate additional side members (50) for direct attachment to a coupler.
Abstract:
A brake actuator assembly (40) for a railway vehicle braking system comprises a flexible elastomeric member (50) directly and sealably attached to a mounting member (80) employed for attaching the brake actuator assembly to the rigid structure of a braking system and to a push rod member (32) connected to the control linkage. The brake actuator assembly is connected to a source of fluid under pressure enabling inflation of the flexible elastomeric member and initiation of a braking sequence of the railway vehicle braking system. The brake actuator assembly of the present invention allows for improved control of the brake shoe forces including visual travel measurement indication which is especially desirable during light load conditions. Currently used brake assemblies employing cylinder type actuators may be retrofitted with the brake actuator assembly of the invention.
Abstract:
A housing (12) for a railway car draft gear assembly (10) for cushioning buff and draft shocks includes a rear portion (14) engageable with the rear stops of such railway car and a front portion (30) configured for attachment to a coupler arm. Opposed ends of the front and rear portions are provided with complimentary flanges for removable attachment of the front portion to the rear portion with threaded fasteners.
Abstract:
An apparatus engageable with a hand brake assembly which will automatically apply at least one brake secured to a railway vehicle with such hand brake assembly. The apparatus of the invention comprises an operating mechanism having at least a portion thereof engageable with at least one gear of a gear assembly disposed in a housing member of the hand brake assembly for operating such gear assembly. The operating mechanism is a two stage pneumatic cylinder (300) having a primary portion (308) for initial phase of the brake application and a secondary portion (310) for the final brake application to apply high forces to comply with AAR requirements. A source of fluid pressure is connected to the operating mechanism for periodically supplying a predetermined pressure to such operating means. A control device is connected to the source of the fluid pressure for initiating the supply of such predetermined pressure to the operating mechanism. A further control device is connected to the source of the fluid pressure for regulating the supply of such predetermined pressure to the operating mechanism thereby causing an automatic application of such brake by the hand brake assembly.
