The present invention relates to a method for stimulating biodegradation and the degassing of waste disposal sites by installing degassing pipes therein. The present invention further relates to a special waste disposal site. It is therefore an object of the present invention to increase the extent of biodegradation as well as the extent of degassing of a waste disposal site.

The present invention relates to a method for producing a modified smectite or smectite-containing substance capable of forming gels which are not longer thixotropic, have a stable cross-linked structure and adhesive characteristic and are capable of taking up and releasing water in a reversible manner by treating a non-activated smectite or smectite-containing substance with a water soluble activating agent and with a water soluble polymer capable of reacting with said smectite, wherein 0-6% by weight, calculated on the weight of the smectite, of the water soluble activating agent and 0.3-6% by weight, calculated on the weight of the smectite, of the water soluble polymer are admixed with the smectite or smectite- containing substance, wherein: at least a part of the water soluble activating agent is added before and/or at latest simultaneously with the soluble polymer, wherein at least a part of the water soluble polymer is added as a dry solid, the mixture obtained contains an amount of water in a range of from 20 % by weight of water to 50 % by weight of water, on basis of the mixture.

The invention relates to a method for protecting the soil (6) against contamination caused by the contents of a storage tank (7, 8) present in or on the ground, wherein a sealing system forming a seal at its bottom side (8) is placed in adjoining relationship with the surface of the storage tank present in or on the ground, which sealing system is built up of one or more layers (1, 2, 3), with the layer (1) adjoining the bottom surface (8) of the storage tank consisting of an oil-impregnated pulverized mineral having a hydrophobic surface. The invention furthermore relates to a soil structure for protecting the soil (6) against such contamination.

The invention concerns a method for protecting the soil against contamination caused by the contents of a storage tank present in or on the ground, wherein a sealing system forming a seal at its bottom side is placed in adjoining relationship with the surface of the storage tank present in or on the ground, which sealing system is built up of one or more layers, with a sealing layer consisting of a smectite and polymer-containing, water-moisturized layer which is substantially impervious to water and to hydrocarbons. The invention furthermore relates to a soil structure for protecting the soil against the intrusion of hydrocarbons.
