Abstract: An optical system includes a backlight configured to emit light from an emission surface thereof, and a front reflector. The backlight includes at least one light source configured to emit a first light having at least a first wavelength. The front reflector is disposed on a back reflector and defines a recycling optical cavity therebetween. The front reflector defines at least one opening therein. When a test material is disposed in the recycling optical cavity, the test material is configured to emit a second light having at least a second wavelength in response to a stimulus. The emitted second light exits the optical system through the at least one opening of the front reflector after being recycled in the recycling optical cavity. The recycling affects an optical intensity of the exiting light.

Abstract: Luminescent imaging films (100) for fluorescent enhancement and methods of making and using the same are provided. The films (100) include a flexible carrier layer (1109, and a pattern of photonic structure (120) disposed on the flexible carrier layer, which is interspersed with an anti-biofouling material (130) to provide a pattern of analyte sites (132). The pattern of photonic structure includes a patterned high-refractive-index dielectric material surface (123) so as to provide resonance at the excitation or emission wavelength to enhance a fluorescence signal from labeled analytes.

Abstract: A backlight includes an extended light source adapted to emit light. A reflective polarizer is disposed on the extended light source, such that for substantially normally incident light and for at least a first wavelength in a range from about 420 nanometer (nm) to about 650 nm, the reflective polarizer reflects at least 60% of the incident light having a first polarization state and transmits at least 60% of the incident light having an orthogonal second polarization state. A first prismatic film is disposed between the extended light source and the reflective polarizer. A retarder layer is disposed between the reflective polarizer and the first prismatic film, such that for substantially normally incident light at a wavelength of about 550 nm, the retarder layer has a retardance nW, where n is an integer ≥ 1 and W is a wavelength between about 160 nm and about 300 nm.

Abstract: An optical stack for sensing a presence of an analyte is provided. The optical stack includes a sensor material. The sensor material includes a first optical response including a first optical property having a second value in response to an excitation signal including the first optical property having a first value different from the second value. The first optical response includes a second optical property sensitive to the presence of the analyte. The optical stack includes a first optical film disposed proximate the sensor material and includes a third optical property having respective third and fourth values in response to the respective first and second values of the first optical property. The third value is different from the fourth value by at least a factor of 2.

Abstract: Fingerprint sensor assemblies using metasurface arrays. The sensor assemblies include an image sensor having a sensor pixel array and a metasurface array on the sensor pixel array. An optical filter such as an IR cutfilter or notch filter can be located on the metasurface array. The assemblies can also include a substrate, optical spacer, or optically clear adhesive between the sensor pixel array and the metasurface array. The fingerprint sensor assemblies can be incorporated into mobile devices.

Abstract: A vehicle sensor system is described comprising an exterior surface; and a repellent composition disposed on the exterior surface, wherein the repellent composition exhibits an increase in haze according to the Dirty Water Spray Test of less than 5, 4, 3, or 2%. In typical embodiments, the repellent composition exhibits an advancing water contact angle from 90° to 125°. In some embodiments, the sensor system comprises a camera, a laser, a LIDAR sensor, a sonar sensor, or a radar sensor. The exterior surface is typically a windshield surface, a protective housing, or a lens surface. In some favored embodiments, the repellent composition exhibits a roll-off angle of no greater than 25, 20, 15, 10 or 5 degrees. Abstract: Adhesion on demand articles include a layer of adhesive and a backing layer in contact with the adhesive layer. The backing layer includes a plurality of cuts, where the plurality of cuts are gaps but the gaps are not visible to the naked eye when the adhesive article is in an unstressed state, but in a stressed state, at least some of the cuts become gaps that permit adhesion of the first major surface of the adhesive layer to a substrate surface.
