A small cell base station for deployment within an overlying cell supported by an overlying cell base station of a wireless telecommunications network and operable to support communication with user equipment, the small cell base station comprises: determining logic operable to determine a presence of the overlying cell and to determine resources allocated for transmission of control plane data by the overlying base station; transmission logic operable to support transmission only of user plane data with the user equipment; and preventing logic operable to prevent transmission of any user plane data within the resources allocated for transmission of control plane data by the overlying cell base station. By transmitting only user plane or selected data, the small cell base station can prevent itself from transmitting that data which identifies itself as a cell to user equipment and thereby prevent user equipment from initiating handover to that small cell. Also, by preventing transmission of the user plane or selected data within those resources which are allocated for transmission of control plane data by the overlying cell base station, any interference caused by transmissions by the small cell are minimised on those control plane transmissions from the overlying cell base station in order to maintain adequate reception of vital control plane transmissions. This helps to ensure that user plane or selected data transmissions can be made from the small cell base station in order to boost capacity where required, without needing to perform handover to those small cells and without causing interference to the control plane transmissions being made by the overlying cell base station.

A client and a server communicate over multiple wireless access paths each using a different wireless network. A method performed at the server comprises receiving at the server a signal from the client via one of multiple wireless access paths, the signal comprising a transport layer portion including a transport layer identifier, the transport layer identifier providing an indication of a wireless access path, a network layer portion, and a data portion, determining from the transport layer identifier, a destination of at least a subset of the signals from the wireless access path indicated by the transport layer identifier, and routing the signal to the destination. If a flow is diverted to travel via a different route, then there must be some mechanism to ensure that the signal arrives at its intended destination. Preferably, a Multi-path Transport Control Protocol (MPTCP) is used as the transport layer protocol. MPTCP binds one or multiple TCP subflows into one logical connection between a content data server and a user client application. In the client device, a network policy module specifies what physical paths can be accessed and whether they are used symmetrically for ACK delivery (marker [a]). Signals that are diverted such that they are sent between these devices on a different access path to that originally envisaged, need to be rerouted within the receiving device such that they arrive at the correct "socket" and can be processed by the appropriate receiver. To implement the "WiFi uplink over LTE uplink" policy, a client pre-routing function (marker [b]) modifies the source/destination IP addresses of the uplink TCP packets prior to passing them to the network so that the network can then transparently carry out the desired traffic routing. On the server side, a server pre-routing function (marker [c]) modifies the destination IP addresses of all TCP ACKs such that the IP layer subsequently ensures delivery to the correct TCP state machines of the server. The server establishes the "TCP ACK - to - TCP socket" mapping during TCP connection setup and maintains its state by monitoring TCP traffic (marker [d]).

A method of selecting transmission parameters of control signalling to be transmitted from a serving base station to user equipment operating in a coverage overlap region of a wireless telecommunications network, a computer program product and base station operable to perform that method. The network comprises: the serving base station configured to support a region of radio coverage which overlaps a region of further radio coverage supported by a further base station. The serving base station and further base station are configured to support the region and further region of radio coverage using common radio spectrum. The method comprises: receiving an indication of a portion of a control region of the common radio spectrum intended for use for transmission of control signalling by the further base station in the coverage overlap region; and selecting transmission parameters of control signalling to be transmitted from a serving base station to user equipment operating in the coverage overlap region to prevent disruption to control signalling transmitted by the further base station in the coverage overlap region. The first aspect recognizes that control signaling may be particularly subject to interference in a region of coverage overlap between two base stations providing radio coverage, and that failure of control signaling might lead to failure of a handover process. By coordinating control signaling transmission parameters specifically in the overlap region it is possible to maintain good spectrum re-use across the entire region of coverage supported by a serving base station and further base stations and yet use interference coordination techniques to mitigate interference effects in the overlap region.
