Abstract: An dynamic optical filter 10 is provided to selectively attenuate or filter a wavelength band(s) of light (i.e., optical channel(s)) or a group(s) of wavelength bands of an optical WDM input signal 12. The optical filter is controllable or programmable to selectively provide a desired filter function. The optical filter 10 includes a spatial light modulator 36, which comprises an array of micromirrors 52 effectively forms a two-dimensional diffraction grating mounted in a retro-reflecting configuration. Each optical channel 14 is dispersed separately or overlappingly onto the array of micro-mirrors 52 along a spectral axis or direction 55 such that each optical channel or group of optical channels are spread over a plurality of micro-mirrors to effectively pixelate each of the optical channels or input signal. Each channel 14 or group of channels may be selectively attenuated by flipping or tilting a selected number of micro-mirrors to thereby deflect a portion of the incident radiation away from the return optical path. The micro-mirrors operate in a digital manner by flipping between a first and second position in response to a control signal 56 provided by a controller 58 in accordance with an attenuation algorithm and an input command 60. The switching algorithm may provide a bit (or pixel) map or look-up table indicative of the state of each of the micro-mirrors 52 of the array to selectively attenuate the input signal and provide a modified output signal 38 at optical fiber 40.

Abstract: A variable optical source (801) to selectively provide a desired optical output signal in response to a control signal is provided. The optical source includes an optical filter that attenuates a broadband optical input signal or a multi-spectral input signal (802). The optical filter is controllable or programmable to selectively provide a desired filter function. The optical filter (10) includes a spatial light modulator (36), which may comprise an array of micromirrors (52) that effectively forms a two-dimensional diffraction grating mounted in a retro-reflecting configuration. The input optical signal is dispersed onto the array of micromirrors (52) along a spectral axis or direction (55) such that input light is spread over a plurality of micromirrors to effectively pixelate the light. The broadband light or signals of the multi-spectral input light is selectively attenuated by flipping or tilting a selected number of micromirrors to thereby deflect a portion of the incident radiation away from the return optical path. The micro-mirrors operate in a digital manner by flipping between a first and second position in response to a control signal (56) provided by a controller (58) in accordance with an attenuation algorithm and an input command (60).

Abstract: An optical coupling device is provided for coupling a pump light into an optical waveguide (10) such as an optical fiber or planar waveguide. An optical source (22) provides a pump light (25). A large diameter optical waveguide is arranged in relation to the optical source, has a diameter substantially greater than 0.3 microns, and includes a reflective surface (24) that reflects the pump light and provides a reflected pump light to the optical fiber. The reflective surface may be either a notched surface of a V-shaped indentation (12) or a cleaved end (68, 70) of the large diameter optical waveguide. Alternatively, the optical coupling device is includes a side tap lens (112) mounted to the large diameter optical waveguide (110) for directing pump light provided by the optical source. The side tap lens is arranged in relation to the optical source and includes a reflective surface 144) that reflects the pump light and provides a reflected pump light to the large diameter waveguide, which directs the pump light to the optical fiber. Abstract: An optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) (10) sequentially or selectively samples (or filters) a spectral band(s) (11) of light from a broadband optical input signal (12) and measures predetermined optical parameters of the optical signal (e.g., spectral profile) of the input light (12). The OSA (10) is a free-space optical device that includes a collimator assembly (15), a diffraction grating (20) and a mirror (22). A launch pigtail emits into free space the input signal through the collimator assembly (15) and onto the diffraction grating (20), which separates or spreads spatially the collimated input light, and reflects the dispersed light onto the mirror (22). A N4 plate (26) is disposed between the mirror 22 and the diffraction grating (20). The mirror reflects the separated light back through the N4 plate (26) to the diffraction grating (20), which reflects the light back through the collimating lens (18). The lens (18) focuses spectral bands of light (η 1- η N ) at different focal points in space. One of the spectral bands (11) is focused onto a receive pigtail (28), which then propagates to a photodetector (30). A pivoting mechanism (34) pivots the diffraction grating 20 or mirror (22) about a pivot point (36) to sequentially or selectively focus each spectral band (11) to the receive pigtail (28). A position sensor (42) detects the displacement of the diffraction grating (24) or mirror.

Abstract: An optical channel monitor is provided that sequentially or selectively filters an optical channel(s) (11) of light from a (WDM) optical input signal (12) and senses predetermined parameters of the each filtered optical signal (e.g., channel power, channel presence, signal-noise-ratio). The OCM (200) is a free-space optical device that includes a collimator assembly (224), a diffraction grating (214) and a mirror (202). A launch pigtail (220) emits into free space the input signal through the collimator assembly (224) and onto the diffraction grating (214), which separates spatially each of the optical channels (11) of the collimated light, and reflects the sep arated channels of light onto the mirror (202). The mirror reflects the separated light back to the diffraction grating (214), which reflects the channels of light back through the collimating lens. The lens focuses each separated channel of light (λ 1 - λ N ) at a different focal point in space. One of the optical channels (11) is focused onto a receive pigtail (204), which then propagates to a photodetector (206). A pivoting mechanism (201) pivots the mirror about a pivot point (203) to sequentially or selectively focus each optical channel (11) to the receive pigtail (204). A position sensor detects the displacement of the mirror. The position sensor comprises additional mirror (210, 212) mounted adjacently the grating (214). These mirrors deflect light reflected from the scanning mirror (202) into the pigtail (242) and provide there by start and stop reference signals for a scan cycle of the OCM.

Abstract: An optical filter for filtering a spectral profile of an optical signal for providing an output signal having a desire gain profile, such as a flatten gain profile. The filter comprises an optical waveguide that includes a core disposed within a cladding having an outer dimension greater than 0.3 mm. A Bragg grating is imparted or written in the core of the waveguide that attenuates the received optical input signal in accordance with a defined reflection or transmission filter profile. The Bragg grating may be a slanted grating. The filter profile is complementary to the spectral gain profile of the input signal to provide an output signal having a substantially flat spectral profile of a desired wavelength band. The cladding of the waveguide may have a mechanically advantageous outer geometry (e.g., a "dogbone" shape) for allowing an axial compressive force to tune the Bragg grating. The waveguide may be packaged within an athermal device, which tunes the grating to compensate for temperature dependent changes. Further, thewaveguide may be packaged in a tuning device to selective tune the gratings to shift the center wavelength of the spectral profile of the filter, or to change the shape of the filter profile.
